Hi, like I've said in a previous post, I'm new to owning a diesel powered truck. I was looking at the throttle cable today for no particular reason, and I noticed that the throttle cable is worn/frayed and that it looks like it won't be too long before it breaks. I just bought this truck from a dealer about 270 miles South of me. Is this normal For a truck with only 49,500 miles, (according to the dealer)??? The throttle linkage/cable wearing out seems ridiculous to me. I've had Dodges that I've put over 300,000 miles on and I never had to worry about throttle linkage. My truck is a 1996 Dually. It has a build date of 10/95. Any suggestions??? I know FIX IT is the best suggestion. Where best to buy the part, etc??? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the answer Rog! Is it on a recall then? It seems like it could be dangerous, if someone didn't know it was so close to breaking. I can invision the throttle getting stuck open, of course, I think you could put it in neutral, and shut it down.

Sorry, I didn't get to the other posts to this thread fast enough before I posted again. So, it was a recall. That should mean that the dealer I bought the truck from should have done it??? Anyway, I imagine any dealer would do it then? Is there something in particular that I should say to him, about what recall notice it was, or whatever? Also, I have a 1996. Was the recall for that year also?

I've been thinking that if it broke, because the truck idles pretty high rpm, that I would be able to idle it home. But, come to think of it, it might not idle so high if the cable breaks!

The new cable comes with plastic over the cable plus a new arm for the pump. It has a different end on the cable so it doesn't come off.

Would the recall still be in effect for my truck. I'm the second owner. Like I said, it seems like the dealer I bought it from, who serviced that truck almost it's entire life, would have done the recall. At 49,500 miles, (according to the dealer), would the cable have worn out twice??? Will they do the recall for me, since I wasn't the original owner?

Look under Discussion Forums then go to Search Forums. Type in throttle cable recall. Scroll down to How long are recalls good for. Theres good info there. Jeff

OK, I checked it out Joe, and the recall hasn't been done. Neither have other recalls been done. Something called the Secondary Hood Latch, and another called the Ignition Switch Wiring. Maybe I could get them to do all of them at one time?

Thanks again for the help!!!

Doug

the throttle cable doesn't show a recall on my truck, but the throttle LINKAGE does.

Are you sure it is the throttle cable, and not the cruise control cable ?? On mine, it's the cruise cable that is fraying. the throttle cable's cable part is fully covered and nit visible to even see it fraying, but the cruise is just that, a cable.

And recalls are good period. I just had the hood latch and throttle linkage done on mine last week.

I think it's the throttle CABLE. It's the one that is the uppermost on the lever. Anyway, I entered my vin at the website with the link above, and it came back that the Throttle cable and linkage have not been done. Maybe it's both of them. Also the Secondary Hood Latch and Ignition Wiring recalls have not been done on this truck.

The 97 cable had already been updated. hence linkage only is upgraded on the recall. :D

Welll there knowledgable sir... . that would explain it. :)

(I wasn't sure if it was or not, but didn't want someone to buy a cable they may not need)

I want to thank everyone for all the help and advice. Monday I'm going to get ahold of the Dodge dealer and see if I can get them on the job. I really shouldn't have much trouble with them, I bought a new Durango for my wife there in 2004. Hopefully they care about customer satisfaction, and return sales. Thanks again everyone!

Doug

I don't think they have any other option than to do the safety recalls for you.

While you are there, ask them if they are aware of the wiring snafu that DC built into the starter circuit and starters that hang up and self destruct.

This is a common enough problem that it should warrant some response from DC.
