Throttle cable stuck story on CNN

They didn't name brands, just said it was big powerful PU, but sure sounded like the infamous 12 valve problem. This lady's throttle stuck wide open in NYC traffic, 80+ mph. Cop got in front of her and applied his parking brake, while the truck was skidding his car down the street the officer jumped out and turned off the truck's key and put it in park. Just goes to show you shouldn't ignore the cable recall.

Stuck throttle

Illflem,

I just saw something on another channel about this but the woman had a Chevy s-10 blazer. Either way it must have been a scary feeling.

The throttle on mine got stuck in rush hour traffic:--) 3 blocks from the dealership after a "frame transplant". , (cracks in front spring perchs). It just goes to show you how much effort and attention they put into their customers vehicles!

Lucky I "ditched" into a side street. , then it would not start, as the + from the alternator was NOT connected! I found it and fixed it myself. MO MORE DEALERSH!Ts for me.

ya that was on the LIE, right near my town, in Suffolk county, Not NYC traffic. Not that it makes it any better... it was commuter traffic. I didn't hear which side of the LIE she was on.

(gotta love that too. . "LIE" - long island expressway... what a lie, there's nothing express about it during the day in either direction. )

Locally they said it was an SUV, no mention of the throttle cable sticking, they said her brakes failed. Which made no sense.

Gotta love accuracy in reporting. These reporters are worse then some kids playing the telephone game.

I know the whole thing sounded wrong. . the report said that when she called on the cellphone to report the problem they told her to shut the SUV off. . but that didn't work when she tried it..... ???

I dont think she could tell the differnce. . what about neutral and the e-brake?

I've always contended that it's far too easy to get a driver's license. Everyone should know what to do in emergency situations.

She actually called someone using her cell-phone while driving an out-of-control vehicle?

"Hi, my name is Suzie, and, I'm like, out of control, you know? Well, it's not me, it's my truck. It just keeps going and won't stop, and I'm starting to worry! Should I do something?"

"Turn it off. "

"Silly! I can't do that and hold the steering wheel and phone at the same time!"

The mind boggles.

yes she actually called the Suffolk county PD, they also do highway patrol on the expressways (I'd guess she had no idea probably just dailed 911)... . state troopers cover the parkways...

I have a feeling since it didnt stop dead in it's tracks she thought it didnt work or the lock up of the TC kept the engine turning and it sounded as if it was running. I know I've dropped my old 68 dodge auto in neutral... turned the engine off (while doing 55) then just turned it back to the on position (not start) and slipped the auto into drive and the engine would start...

I don't know... I just cant believe she couldnt find neutral and use the e brake.

there was another one that was on the news years ago. they followed up and said they couldnt find anything wrong with the car. and the chick was in all sorts of trouble later for OTHER false reports to the police. you have to wonder...

I wonder if the cops asked her if she was using a hands free system on her cell phone. Besides seatbelts, they are supposed to be cracking down on not holding the phone while you talk while you drive..... except for me, I don't see anyone complying with the state law... ANOTHER NY state Feel good law thats just redundant to laws already on the books they don't enforce.

Not that that would help, it's the fact that they're chatting while they are supposed to be driving. If some can tune a radio while driving they should be able to hold a cell phone... ... . it the fact that they cant walk and chew bubble gum at the same time.

oh well, I stop rambling at the keyboard now.

illflem.....

" On her interview she was blond. Is that a good enough excuse? "

gotta love it.

Dunno about Montana Illflem but on the east coast seems like every woman's blond these days. Like the Irish comic Shamus said to one woman at a show one day; you have such lovely blond hair miss, shame you dyed that dark streak in the down the center of your head. RONFLMAO

for what ever reason it finally made the local news channel today.

it was an 1994 S10 blazer.

she was a redhead. . looked as if it was dyed red (fumes cause blondeness IQ levels?) She's an EMT.

She said her throttle was stuck , she was doing 85 and the brakes wouldnt stop her.

she called 911 and well you know the rest.

The new played part of the 911 call, she said her brake where out and she's running down the highway at 85 and she's gonna hit someone. you could hear her horn honking in the background.

my take. . she got caught speeding and talking on the cell.

she figured her way out of it with this story...

why do i say that. .

there was ZERO damage to her front end and the rear of the cop car. saw the new video of them on the side of the road and interviewing the cop standing next to the rear of his car and the front of hers.

If her throttle was stock and transmission stuck and no brakes... ... she would have been pushing the heck out of the rear of his patrol car and atleast her plastic grill would have been in peices.

I guess she eased into the cop car and came off the throttle.

There was the same exact story on one of the cop shows on the one of those discovery or learning channels on cable... woman in the south made up the story when she wouldnt pull over for speeding... mentioned it to my wife while watching the news report and she remembered it too... wonder if this redhead saw the same show?

The story sure sounds cocky, but I think cops normally let EMTs off with a warning, if they are given some kind of an excuse. All she needed to do was to show her ID and make up an excuse.

The story I read said that her car slowed to 50 when she put it in neutral. Maybe the throttle stuck, then she rode the brakes until they failed before she thought to put the transmission into neutral. By that time the brakes were useless and all she needed was another vehicle to match her speed until they connected, then slow her down.

I wouldn't want to try to tell a redhead that she was full of crap :-{}

:D
