I've got a problem with transmission sometimes not shifting into OD (4th), and sometimes hunting between 3rd and 4th with slight movement of the accelerator. TPS seems to be flakey, but I just checked some prices and was stunned to see some of them around $280. There are also several listings around $50. Are these interchangeable?

Colin, my email is anvilsvs@yahoo. Price, location?

Greenleaf, details please. I'm pretty well trained in electronics. Sounds like maybe a wirewound pot would hold up in this application. I've also got machine tools (lathe, mill) in the shop to adapt something like this. Got to be cheaper than $300.

KOG,

You didn't mention it, but have you tried adjusting the nut that engages the throttle lever, under the TPS? I've been messing with mine lately. There are bunches of previous posts about how to do it correctly... I prefer the hit or miss method.

Just got my FSM today and it covers the adjustment procedure. But the TPS seems erratic in operation so it looks like replacement is required.

Piers Diesel also has a modified adjustment procedure posted online which sounds reasonable for the trial approach.

You can take them apart and clean them. I have never bought a new one.

There was an article on how to do this in one of the first TDRs.

I would think if you cleaned it and it functioned well then it's a no brainer, leave it alone. The potentiometer is not all that much work and it is multi adjustable and does not cost $280. 00.

Why would you want to do all that work when you can clean the one that fits and plugs right in?

A very large number of folks have a TPS problem. The potentiometer is a solution to the problem and not a temp fix like replacing it with a new one.

Another life saver is to install a speed sensor by-pass switch. When you loose your speed sensor... . and you will... . throw the manual switch and you will once again have OD gear. Still no speed-o, but you'll have OD, untill you can replace the speed sensor. Very easy connection to perform. Or carry a spare speed sensor with you.

I have cleaned the TPS and all it cost was a little silicone.

Take the TPS off. Set in your recliner with a TV tray on your lap.

Take your pocket knife and cut the seal around the top.

Take it apart and clean the little ball of grease and carbon out.

Put back togeather and seal with silicone.

Cost a little time and a little silicone.

Will work for several years.

This was written about in one of the first TDRs.

Mine didn't come aprt with a pocket knife. Or various other reasonable hand tools. It came apart with a Dremel, and not easily. The cover was plastic welded on this one. It's siliconed back on, but I don't have much faith in it at this point.

I recall the Dremel tool was required. Again, it's a temporary repair. For those who enjoy performing a little modification the pot is the way to go. If you don't mind fiddl'n with the tps time and time again, the OEM unit is your bag.

Good luck in what ever you decide.

I cut the cilicone seal on the top of the TPS, then inverted it in my hadn to leave the metal part sticking up. I spread a set of small needle nosed pliers just enough to fit down into the slots, so to speak, and whacked the needle nose with a hammer a couple times. It all came tumbling out in my hand, and I didnt lose anything. Once you get this far, it's self explanatory.

I had to do this in Mom's truck (mine was down for I-forget-what at the time) on my way to pick up my girlfriend on our 3rd or 4th date. Did it in a gas station parking lot, making me about 10min late. I still didnt have consistent OD, so I pushed the OD OFF button and held it to the floor.

I don't have a potentiometer on my truck. I have never experienced a TPS problem outside the fact it was way out of adjustment when I bought my first truck years ago. I drove it that way for some time. I figgured it was supposed to operate the way it did. The PO had installed a replacement the same year I purchased the truck.

The Dremel tool is mentioned in a TDR article. About four years ago, by Pastor Bob. Issue # 40/41 or thereabout.

The last person I spoke with concerning the install of a pot. in place of the OEM unit was $11. 00 That was Dec. 18th 2006.

I found the FSM volt reading specs are not manditory. They are a ball park and the trans will shift in/out if you don't achieve the exact reading(s) I simply began turning the adjustment bolt and it began to operate differently. Not nesessarily better. Just different. Seems to operate about the way it should now. Someday I will install the pot to guard against a high-priced OEM unit.

There is a lot of good info here from a variety of sources that addresses a pretty common problem.

There is no right or wrong way only results that solve the problem. Let's keep that in mind and keep things off the personal level.

We don't all have to agree, but, we do have to keep in mind others opinions don't match ours.

Take a moment to reflect on the content of your post before you hit the enter key. :)
