I have a 99 Dodge 3500 with about 151,000 miles and a 5 speed transmission.

When I'm pulling a load at highway speeds the engine goes to idle, and the throttle pedal gets stiffer. If you push in the clutch and let the RPM drop to about 1,000 then pull out the clutch it works fine again. This happens anywhere from every 30 seconds to hours apart. It has been doing this for about 2 year now. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Have you checked for codes? When mine did this it had a CEL light and what it turned out to be was an APPS. Replaced and all is good now, I tried changing MAP and ATS first did not help.

Sounds like TPS sensor (actually APPS). Mine went bad similarly, first was intermittent, then one day would only idle, had no throttle at all. There are some post on how to check your APPS, also keep in mind that it is truck specific (to engine number) in '99.

If it is cruise related, then there is another fix, the brake light switch has 2 separate contacts, one for lights, one for cruise. It was common for the cruise contacts to fail, and is easily fixed.

I have had it checked for codes but it didn't have any, but every body I talked to said it might be either APPS or the injector pump. I checked the volts to the APPS and it was low so I adjusted it the way it said to in issue 66 page 30 if that doesn't work I will be getting a new APPS. Thank you for your help it is nice to get information from people that have had problems like mine.

Just finished Timbo's APPS install on my 99. It runs great now. $160 and a little labor is much better than buying the whole unit for big bucks & I assume his components will last longer than the OEM junk.
