My father is doing a swap with a 24v 2002 into a 50's ford something. I am not completely familer with 2nd gens. Since i dont know what its offically called, ill call it the "throttle box" above the vp44. What i assume is that it turns a mechanical signal from cab throttle pedal into an electric signal for the vp44? The other piece hanging off of it is cruise control. But im not sure for what purpose another cable gos down to the transmission for. What i am looking for is basically a how it works description so we can eliminate unnessicary parts, or replace parts with aftermarket, Cleaner less cluttered appearing parts. Example could i install a throttle pedal with a potentiometer built in ranther than have that box above the vp44. The transmission will be getting a kit in which you shift it manually with buttons.

The "throttle box" is the APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor). The cable to the transmission is the TV (throttle valve) cable which influences shift points based on throttle position. I think the APPS connects to the ECM which then communicates with the VP44.

You are correct, it is a fly by wire system. He will have to retain the ecm on the engine block along with the APPS. Sounds like hes got an automatic trans, if he will be using the dodge 47re the trans functions are controlled through the pcm which is mounted on the pass side fire wall. I dont know if he will need it or not If hes going with a manual valve body

A TDR member was making and selling a neat small variable resistor to replace the 24 valve APPS. Someone will know and provide a link or contact info. I don't know if you can eliminate the throttle linkage to the automatic transmission without causing issues with shifting.
