There are 2 small oil channels on the thrust plate that holds the cam shaft to the block. Do these channels face the block (in) or do they face toward the gear (out).

Thanks

I think the oil grooves go toward the front of the engine. I think if you put it on backwards, the bolt holes will not line up properly. try laying the thrust plate on the block, one way everything will look fine, if you flip it over, Line up the bolt holes, the place for the cam will be way off to one side of the cam bore. If it looks like it would work either way, you might want to get someone else Who knows. P.

The plate will definitly install either way. I'm pretty sure the oil grooves should face in - against the thrust bearing on the cam. Can somebody comfirm?

the grooves should go toward the back of the engine (facing the cam journal)

Most of the newer ones from cummins are grooved on both sides so you can't screw it up but i guess yours isn't?

Problem is, I already put the cam back on and pulled out my tappet holders. I can't remember if mine has the grooves on both sides and I'm afraid to seal things up without knowing. I haven't reinstalled my rocker assemblies yet so I can pull the cam just enough to pull the plate and have a look... I just hate having to do it.

Are you sure the thrust plate on my 98 has grooves on both sides?

-john

The grooves ARE on both sides, for anyone curious. It only took me a few minutes to slide the cam out enough to pull the plate out and have a peek.
