Has anyone tried installing the Thule roof rack for our trucks? The kit taht Thule requires to mount the foot packs to the cab is the 1528, which requires the mount to be screwed into your door molding using the one existing sheet metal screw for each of the four brackets. This screw is 1/2" in length and about 1/16" in thread width. This is a joke. One trip down the freeway and the whole pod and rack will be lying on the road somewhere.

Never used a Thule rack before, nor does it sound, from your description, that I ever will !! :-laf Of course, I don't need to as I have a Caravan camper shell with a roof rack that can carry 1000# of lumber on it. Oo.

If you need a roof rack, why not go with a lumber style rack that can hold just about anything ?? Often you can find them on Craigslist in many differnt styles. There are also custom fabricators that do NICE work in either steel OR aluminum... of course they ARE somewhat spendy depending on their complexity !!

I have that Thule roof rack and you are right, not much holding it in place. When I use it I always make sure that my kayak is tied down with straps from both ends to either my grill guard in front and a the rear stake pocket in the back.

Is the rack 'pinching' itself to the roof like a vise?

Not the roof directly but to four rain gutter type brackets that are fastened to the roof with one small sheet metal screw for each bracket. I believe the Yakima clamps directly to the roof. Seems like a better design.
