I am presently about one/half way thru a 3,000 mile RV trip. My 2007. 5, 3500 has been running very well... . but...

During high and gusty head winds there is an occasional (about every 3 to 8 seconds) and random thumping noise which appears to come from the forward edge of the dash. I checked under the dash, but no wind gets in that area any way. Then checked under the hood. The trim fiber board liner of the front of the dash area (but in the engine compartment) was loose. I bought new trim plugs and some glue and glued the darn thing down. No help. I now suspect the large under-hood fiber board. It sort of hangs down from the hood. I am not willing to drill more holes in the hood to try a blind luck fix. The thumping is fairly loud, as if hammer handle was being popped against a plastic or fiber area.

Has anyone else had such a problem?

I had this same problem after I added a bug deflector. It turned out to be the air vent louvere rattling against the windshield. It is the plastic pieces under the wiper arms. You could see it flutter in the wind. added a piece of adhesive felt under one side and it cured my issue.

Also watch the wipers themselves... I have had the wiper blades "walk" during high winds and make a thumping noise. They don't need to move very much to make the noise either... less than 1/4 inch.

BILVO: I'll be checking that tomorrow when we go North from Cody, WY.

steved: That was one of my first suspects. Then I had a series of hard "thumps" with both of the wind shield wipers perfectly still.

Thanks guys,
Bill S.

P. S. I HAVE just added a bug deflector...

This is the cause for a lot of noise issues it takes air that would flow over the hood and causes it to become turbulant and makes all kinds of thing happen and flutter and rattle that normally wouldn't.

Score! (For BILLVO)

It took both the wife and myself to confirm. When I was looking at the trim on my side, hers would thump, and vice versa. After a few dozen confirmations of movement at the same time as the bang, we agreed that the trim was the culprit.

Be home tomorrow... . then for some 1/16" thick window sash tape.

Thanks!
