Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 2 more miles per gallon?

Did a search on the infamous "tick" and found out it has three major causes.

Valve adjustement (adjusted 5k ago)

Overflow valve (whatever)

Fuel pump part worn

Most noticable at idle or slightly above, kinda comes and goes every few seconds or so, worse now that it is warmer temps  , goes away when reved up.

Anyone ever figure it out?

Was Overflow on mine.

I checked my fuel pressure and determined that my Overflow valve was the source of the Tickey Tick Tick.

I got a replaement O. V. from TST.

No more ticky.

SFB

A 3/8'' lag bolt imbedded it my front tire caused my tick, tick, tick.

Went away after I pulled it out but so did the air in the tire. ;)

It's probably your overflow valve. Put a piece of pipe or a long screwdriver up to your ear and the other end to various engine parts till you find it.

Anyone know what goes bad in the overflow valve? Spring break? Check ball get stuck? Or does it just fail

I'll try the screwdriver experiment and see if I can find it.

Where is the LP located, I guess I could follow the fuel lines to it

Lift pump is down below the fuel filter on the side of the engine. The thingy with the primer plunger on it. Inside is a rod that rides a lobe on the camshaft. If the internal spring gets weakor fails, it slaps the cam instead of following it smoothly.

tap tap tap tap tap tap

it turned out to be my lift pump too. dern thing only lasted 251,000 miles :D it was more pronounced in cold weather. if that helps. if you have a guage on it, my tick was right in time with the spikes on the guage.

When the overflow valve goes bad and starts ticking what does that do to fuel pressure and engine power?????

Thanks in advance for you experiences

Ticking doesn't necessary equate to poor fuel psi or performance, simply the part's demise.

A fuel psi gauge will determine that.

On the ov flow valve the internal components rattle/buzz/tick.

The check valves and springs in the lift pump start to get weak causing the tick. Like worn lifters on a gasser.

Excessive pressures (read fuel line restriction or an ov flow valve spring that's been stretched too much) can cause a lift pump's tang to "slap" the camshaft lobe which moves it. . not good.

Low fuel pressure equals lower power and performance and lesser fuel mileage (to an extent).

The min. spec is 20 psi after the filter at rated rpm (high idle governed speed).

I find that it should be very close to 20 at idle and approaching 30 when rev'd. With a healthy ov flow valve, lift pump etc.

A new lift pump/ov flow valve will consistently be in the mid to high twentys at any rpm.

Anything above 32 psi or so is too much for most folks applications. . sometimes causing the tick. tick... . :)

Good luck

Definately the LP, did the screw driver trick and easy to locate.

Will check FP next week then pray to the Lift Pump fairy ;) or overflow valve fairy.

If FP is >30 when reved I guess the overflow valve needs to be replaced. The person doing the checking has a new valve to substutute if needed.

Seems strange that it comes and go's though... But you can always hear the tap tap through the screw driver

Can I retrofit a LP from a 24 valve? (Just kidding)
