Had a 12 valve and got my 24 valve about a year ago. The 24 valve makes a ticking noise from day one . It sounds like a solid lifter or valve rocker out of adjustment. Truck runs fine and I suspect maybe exhaust as the culprit. I know the overvalved engines do sound different and maybe this is normal. What say the????

Unless it was pretty severe, I wouldn't worry about it - pretty typical of diesels to have at least SOME small distinctive noise rise above the rest - my '91 had it's own distinctive small noises, and I'm sure my '02 does as well - unless they are unusually loud or UNtypical, no need for concern... These year diesels ARE sorta noted for loose or missing exhaust manifold bolts that will make a "ticking" sound, and THAT should be checked and corrected if need be... ;) :D

It very well could be a valve lash setting out of adjustment. Run the rack and see if it goes away. The VP44 makes some ticking noises too.

Gene,

come on by when you can and we can take a listen to it. Mine has a few noises that I thought were a little strange at first, but I have not seen any ill effects from them. I just chalked them up as normal:D

Gene,

I have a similar sound in mine. Sometimes it's more of a thumping noise, and sometimes a tick. I've also described it as the sound of a lifter on a gasser. In my case, it may have something to do with towing - it seems more noticeable when I'm towing or for awhile after I've towed. It used to dissipate after towing, although it seems to be present at other times now. Howard (LSmith) has heard mine and he's heard it on his before. I know other guys who have heard it on theirs too. After 40,000 miles (about 10,000 towing), I don't see any reason to worry about it since my truck runs fine.
