About a week ago a noticeable tick started coming from the injector pump or somewhere in its vicinity. I just got the truck back from the shop and they said that the pump checks out and the sound could be a noisy injector or a lifter. They told me to run some fuel additives which I already do (Valvoline). I've got 65,000 miles on it and run it pretty easy. The juice was just upgraded to hot about a week ago just after I started noticing the tick. So I haven't even ran the truck with the hot juice passed level 3 cause I'm worried about the ticking noise and the probability of it coming from the pump. Any thoughts?

I got a ticking noise yesterday, and about 1 minute later had what they are saying is a hole blown thru a piston. Dealers diesel guy said as soon as the injector fails, it blows a hole in the piston! Mark at TST said it's more common than I'd like to think. Good luck.

That's no s--t, it's running out the exhaust pipe by the quart! Well, I got it to a dealer yesterday, they think it'll be a complete replacement. Dealer said an injector failed, & as soon as that happened it blew a hole in the piston. I've got Amsoil running out of the exhaust pipe by the quart! Mark at TST said it's more common than I'd want to believe. He also said if I need a engine to get back with him, he might be able to get me a crate motor. If anyone knows of any, I would sure like to know about it.

No more Tick

Following up on status of the ticking. Took the truck to another shop on 12/11/06 and they told me the same thing. They think it is coming from a lifter or a loud injector. Well I've been running Valvoline Diesel Cleaner every tank since it started ticking as the first shop recommended. On the way home last night the ticking stopped. Had an appointment for tomorrow to get the valves adjusted and just canceled.

If the ticking noise is from the front of the engine and sounds like it could be gear train you might try marking the pump drive gear, take it off and rotate the pump shaft 30 degrees and reinstall the gear. It has something to do with the phasing of the three pump chambers. If they are just in the wrong spot, the drive gear can rock back and forth as the chambers pump, causing the gear to rattle. If not any better, rotate another 30 degrees and try. It is easy to do, and if your handy it is free.

This was copied from a post from Sag2, Dodge tech. CP3 ticking Posted for info only. Might not apply to your problem.

I heard the same thing from a tech at work yesterday about the geartrain noise. Bosch is supposed to start marking the pumps as to where to position the gear.

My 07 started to make a ticking/knocking type noise today. Can hear it from the passenger side of the motor. Opened the hood and crawled in and tried to narrow where it was coming from. Mostly from the front of the motor. Only 1500 miles so I am a bit worried.
