I searched and found the suggestion to adjust valves, I did that a few were out a little but not bad. But I still hear a ticking noise at the front drivers side of engine. I seems to get quite, but not go away after warm up. Any idea what to look at next? Is there anything in the pump that can make that noise?

Thanks for the help!

Had the same thing happen to mine at about the same mileage. Two mechanics swore it was valves and they could hear it in the valve cover. When the pump quit and we tore it down the problem was obvious. There are 2 plunger return springs in the bottom of the pump to return the charge piston. Evidently one spring collapsed enough so there was slack and the tick was the plate hitting the weak spring. When the pump finally quit it had broken about a coil and a half off of both springs. This is one of the weak spots in the VE 44 pump and one of the first things to upgrade on a rebuild, or so they tell me. My pump lasted almost 20,000 miles before it quit but it was a steady decline in performance. From your sig the pump is turned up and thats usually what accelerates the spring death. The best case is the pressure will start dropping and you will notice a performance decrease. The worst case is when the broken coil comes loose floats around and gets chewed up. The pieces tend to get spit out into the injectors and cause all manner of problems. :(

Diagnosing noises over the internet is not very exact and it could be something else but it sounds a lot like what I experienced. Good luck.

any word on what happened here? My truck was making a ticking noise, and I loctated it to the injector pump, it just started. It sounds like a ticking in the cab, but up close and to the touce it feels more like a quick/sharp bzzt bzzt bzzt bzzt... . and so on, it is most noticable decelerating to a stop, while it idles down, but speeds up in time with rpm. I think I may be calling piers for a new pump soon :{ truck has about 200K miles, I THINK

Case500D's "new to him W350" had the same sound from the pump. Plus it wouldn't keep up on cruise control on hills. The engine didn't sound like a Cummins when it idled. The exhaust smell was weak also. I could run off and leave him at any speed.

So that is some of the other problems you might see later in the pumps life.

If the sound is coming from the inj pump. It most likely is on its way out.

Schields has better prices than PDR on reman pumps.
