My truck developed a ticking sound which sounds to be in the engine compartment. It sounds sort of like an exhaust leak, but i can't find one that seems severe. You can hear it really well in the cab at 1600 - 2000 rpm. Can't hear it outside the truck, only in the cab with the windows rolled up. This developed after a trip to the dealer to have the fuel and air filters changed. The lift pump was also found to be bad and replaced. Could it be valve problems?

Any other ideas?

Mechanical fuel pressure gauge....

I get a loud tick from mine in the cab with the hose running in. Even without the gauge your new pump may just be transmitting the hammer from the VP44 back a little more now.

Maybe this...

Are you noticing mainly when you're using the cruise control, or off the accelerator slowing down?

Mine occasionally makes a ticking sound too. But I know what mine is. When I take my foot off the pedal, the actual pedal itself, "ticks," at certain rpms (using the cruise control). But while cruising if I lightly put my foot back on the pedal, its immediately gone. Of course I don't want to hold my foot there, so since I know that's what it is, I just let it do it. I don't even hear it anymore.

I also have the ticking sound that you're describing. Sounds like it's coming from the drivers side of the engine and it doesn't do it all the time, kinda drives me crazy! It's been doing it on mine for quite some time. When I first heard it I asked the question but didn't really come up with any concrete answers so I just consider it to be part of the engine music??

My wifes truck has the same ticking... though hers didn't start until after the clock spring was replaced.

How do I stop this darn ticking?? Boy is it driving me crazy... I'm almost to the point where I refuse to drive in her truck because of it.

Tick tick tick.....

The cruise if off or on, it does not matter. Tick tick tick. I was standing outside the truck this morning and letting it idle just after startup. I went around to the right side of the cab and it appeared I could hear it. I am thinking that it may be an exhaust leak. There is a small amount of soot around the round area on the turbo where it mounts up.

I think I may see if this is covered under the 100k warranty. If so, maybe they will fix it.

I had a ticking sound but it was only at full throttle above 2600 rpm. I replaced the lift pump and moved it the frame rail and no more ticking noise.
