I have a ticking noise from behind driver side door front of bed at idle(maybe under power, just can't hear while inside). Don't think it's a exhaust leak, seems like I remember someone talking about this before, and was the P-pump???

I don't know how a the injection pump would cause a ticking noise at that location.

Usually when the injection pump is ticking you can hear on driver's side under the hood.

When my pump ticks I put some "Amsoil Diesel Fuel Additive" in the fuel tank it does a few things but mainly cleans things out. The pump will tick when dirt get introduced in it (usually the delievery valves) but on some the tick won't go away. (Use whast ever brand of cleaner you wish). By the way my pump has only ticked twice since I've had truck.

A little bit of explanation of how the lift pump works might help understand. There is a push rod that follows a lobe on the cam shaft. The push rod uses a piston to compress a big spring. The spring is what pushes the fuel. This design prevents excess fuel pressure or damaged parts if the fuel flow cannot keep up with the piston. So there may be some slack in the system when the push rod can't keep up with the cam lobe because the spring is behind in pushing fuel. That is what causes the click. I think that on the highway it may be clicking most of the time, but the noise is covered up by the general racket of the engine. If the lift pump is working don't worry about the clicking.

You might check your fuel filter. My truck started ticking after tanking up with ULSD. There are some more posts on here about it. ULSD will move all the junk in the fuel system straight to your filter. My filter was BLACK.

Your fuel filter will get black in few miles because of asphalt in the fuel. That is not a problem. If you switch to biodiesel it will clean out the whole fuel system and may plug up the filter.

Yeah its just the lift pump ticking, no biggie mine did the same thing at around 170k I checked fuel pressure and then put a new one on and it made no diiference other then the ticking stopped. Youll be fine

Mine is doing it... . I wanted to check to see if it was the lift pump so I used dowel rod test. I put a long dowel rod against the pump and then put my ear against the end of the dowel rod. . It was easy to hear. .
