Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Ticking Noise?

Resently after coming down to a stop light after being on the freeway, a new ticking noise has shown up. Not sure where it is coming from. Can be heard in or out of vehicle, louder on the left side (driver). It becomes silent as soon as you start to push on the accelerator petal. Anyone have any ideas I would really appreciate it.

I can only guess because I can't hear it but it sounds like your lift pump may be on it's last legs. The spring may have weakened and the actuator arm is slapping the cam instead of keeping constant contact. Buy a mechanic's stethoscope to be sure, they're cheap. Take care of it soon or you may be replacing a cam along with the lift pump. Sometimes weak overflow valves will also tick at idle.

Sometimes one of the delivery valves is sticking a little, put a good injector cleaner or diesel fuel conditioner (cleans and lubricates... ) in fuel to see if it goes away.

I have a clicking noise that is coming from the left side rear axle... . it is most audible during slow decelleration and goes away when I hit the throttle. I've pulled brake drums and checked all the easy to get to stuff. I am beginning to suspect something in the limited slip but am not sure how to diagnos.

Mine has done the same thing since new. A stethiscope showed the noise was loudest on the fuel return line. The dealer said it was a normal noise. Mine does it when hot at idle and at a 1500 rpm light throttle. Someone said a bad fuel return spring could cause this ticking. I agree but have never changed it yet.

mine is a 97. It has a ticking noise too, but I have adjusted the valves, and change the lift pump also.

still have a ticking sound at idle, but mine starts after it is half way warm up. Sometimes it is loud and sometimes it is a not so loud ticking.

somedays it will tick and somedays it won't.

i'm going in circles on this one.

I have the same ticking noise that seems to be coming from the fuel tank. How loud it is seems to depend on how full/empty the tank is. Is this related to the lift pump? Mine has been doing it for the last few years that I have owned it.

I have the same noise it is coming from the over flow valve. The click is it snapping open and closed to the pulses from the lift pump. The noise went alway on mine as the over flow lost it's spring tension and the fuel pressure dropped. Get a long screw drive and listen to the over flow valve.....

hi everyone, well been running in circles with the ticking noise i had. well lets see i change the lift pump , change the clutch , and adjust the valves. the sound was like a sticking cam tappet. so if all else fails take it to cummins to work on it , and i did. they found the problem, it was the oil pickup tube in the oil pan. it is amazing what a oil pickup tube, can make it sound like you have other problem. im very happy Oo. Oo. Oo. that they found the annoying tick. so if any of you have a ticking noise, you might what to keep this in mind.

hope this will help someone else out, in stead of spending alot of $$$$$ like i did, for something so simple.

hello berrigan,

they sad that the vibration from which the motor makes at idle. the pickup tube was only a 1/16 of an inch or less from the bottom of the oil pan. well inside of the oil pan is painted black of some sort of coating. the lowest point in the pan, is the end of the oil pickup tube. there was a shiny spot were it had been hit the oil pan.

First of all thanks to those that helped with ideas. But today while up at Diesel Transmission Technology my answer appeared. It turned out that the noise I was hearing was coming from a rubber line and check ball found on the right side of the transmission (auto) The rubber line has a check ball in it that keeps the torque converter from draining, so that is how I understand it. It is also a failure point in the dodge lineup. The recomendation was to put a Stainless steel braided line in place of it to keep the line from exploding and also eliminate the check ball. After replacing the line the rattle is gone, and heck the line looks cool too.

Pump ticking

Some have mentioned that the ticking sound sounds like its coming from the fuel tank or fuel lines back toward the tank. If the lift pump is indeed ticking some of the sound will transmit down the steel fuel lines. I have heard this on a more then one truck.
