After I start my truck and its running, every once in a while i hear a ticking sound. Is it the lift pump or could it be something else?

Can you possibly provide more specifics such as if you can hear the ticking noise at the front or back of the engine, ect. ? Also can you tell if there is a miss, even a slight one? Maybe a little more smoke? The last two questions are concerning a possible injection pump problem. When were the valves set last? Is the truck is low on power? Just some thoughts.

Ticking

The ticking is comming from the drivers side of the engine. The engine is running fine, just had it tuned up. The shop said I might think of considering installing a new one sometime because they are known to go bad. I was in a hurry and forgot to ask him if the ticking was the lift pump.

It sounds like it's the same noise as mine makes.

Mine has been doing this for about 90K miles now, if youre fuel pressure is OK dont worry bout it. :D

My pump did this for a long time and I finally got tired of it so I replaced it with a new one from Cummins, which greatly improved things. It will still tick a little some times but not near so much now. One thing that can cause this is if the fuel pressure is too high like if someone has starched the spring in the overflow valve too much. I did this on mine once and the higher pressure really made it tick.
