Well folks, I got my headgasket done. Fired it up and it runs great... . but it sounds like I have a rocker arm out of adjustment. So I have now checked my valve lash 4 times. Do these truck have Hydraulic compensators in the valve train? I believe it is cylinder 4 or 5 making the noise, but I have not fired it up with the valve covers removed to find it.

Any ideas?

Josh

There are several posts on ticking noises caused by the mechanical lift pump going bad. Since you have re-checked the valve lash, could this be your ticking source?

No hydraulic lifters. Just the cam followers, pushrod and rocker arm before the valve.

I had a ticking lp. A spring inside the pump was tired. Was about the length of the stroke, short. Got a new one from the local C-IH dealer. Less the $100, including the two gaskets.

The one thing I noticed today..... which worries me a little... . if I get over 30ish psi boost... . it almost sounds like I'm floating a valve. No good. I may be pulling the valve covers tomorrow to inspect. I hope I don't have a broken intake valve spring.

Did ya do the screw driver ear piece test? When R. ebel worked on mine it had a tick after we put it back together. He was able to determine which valve cover to take off by putting a screw driver tip on the cover and put his ear up to the handle with it idleing. Does it 'tick' at idle or only with acceleration? Turned out we had a gasket cockeyed on the exh. manifold that was only noticable under accell. Also we ended up with the lashes adjusted perfectly. :D

Did all the push rods find their way back inside of the lifter instead of on the edge of it? Also did the push rod flange slip off the ball on the end of the rocker lever. If one is not fully seated or slipped out, I bet a push rod is bent (when rocker tower is retorq'd). I usually ck. the push rods when the head is off or a cam is out on a flat surface just for grins. Once in a while one has a bow and requires replacement.

You may have a little valve overlap when retorq. which can cause tension and compress a valve spring or two a bit (cylinder 2 and 5?). No worries as long as its pulled down nice and gentle and everything is lined up.

The exhaust manifold gasket is a good thing to ck. Also is the intake gasket/air horn/inlet gasket torn anywhere?

Good luck

Andy

Well Andy, that may be where my trouble started. When I was putting it together I had a pushrod (cylinder 5) that caught the edge of the rocker, not in the cup. So when I tightened the rocker tower down it compressed the valve spring fully. I would think that if it was a bent pushrod that I would have a tick all the time but I wouldn't get the high boost "float" that I'm hearing. I will check them anyway, it's always good advise!

Off to try another suggestion!

Thanx guys,

Josh

P. S. I didn't remove the exhaust manifold or the intake manifolds.
