I just had a tie rod failure on my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel!

I have about 70. 000 miles and was wondering what is a good replacement?

I see Moog on the net, but is there a better one?

Thanks.

tie rod replacement

There is a lot of discussion on this forum about the 08 steering upgrade. It is a "kit" from Dodge with reportedly beefier components. It includes everything but the pitman arm and the steering stabilizer. Last time I checked the kit was around $ 224 and the pitman arm around $ 54; really not too bad considering it replaces the entire steering system from the steering box to the knuckles. Do a search on "08 steering" for lots of info.

I had the recall on mine this summer. All the service writer did was look under the truck and said I was OK. I had 82k on it at the time. Should I be concerned? I have a complete stock setup. Does this happen to trucks with mods or is it just luck of the draw? Thanks.

The Update kit is the only way to go. Much better design Toe in adjust ment does not change as the truck bounces as it did with the old design. it's well worth the money, and if you had one tierod end fail the rest are not far behind.

I have still warranty but money is tight! And I have a $100 co pay on it. I am wondering wether they would change it out to the beefier or just swap out the broken/worn parts?
Or bite the bullet and just fork out for some moog parts ie. ?!
Decisions, Decisions... ... ... .....

ps also I have a Kore suspension (not a lift) on my baby and here in CA they are funny with that all of the sudden now that Chrysler isn't doing well. Seems like they are trying to deny any warranty claims.

Moog. I had the stock go out at 40k and 80k and once out of warrenty I went with Moog ends and joints (Grease fittings on joints) I have 160k and they are still tight.

My passenger side outer tie rod end separated at 140,000 while I was driving on a Forest Service road at about 10 MPH with my truck camper in the bed, quite the scary moment.

Replaced most of the steering linkage with Moog parts, as that was what I could get quickly in Condon, MT, population 35.

Figure if one was bad, the others are close to failing as well. You don't want this happening at speed and suddenly having your two front wheels pointing in different directions.

I bought a Moog and I am happy for now. Maybe one day I can afford the dodge upgrade kit but right now money is tight and this will do.
Thank you every one for the help!!!

Merry christmas and a happy new year to all of you!!!!!!

A little late now, but if it was under warranty there is no PN for just the joint so you get the upgrade because the joint PN supersedes to the kit.

I just got a terminal diagnosis on all my tie rod ends. Is this Dodge upgrade kit available for the 2005? Or is it just for later models?

Here are the part numbers I just got done doing this on my 03. Much better steering!! I did however just go with Source Automotive's kit since it already had the grease zerks installed. Stock does not have zerks installed...

52122362AE--Steering Kit

6505623AA--Nuts (3), to attach new linkage $1. 25 each

6502835--Nuts (2), to attach steering damper $0. 38 each

6502473--Bolt (1), to attach steering damper $2. 50

68039930AA-- 08 Pitman Arm $51. 52

I checked the Moog parts list they say they now have replacement stuff for the 08 system. The H46 recall was on only about 19,000 kits only some early ones were an issue. It's easy to see if you have a "bad" kit. The Tie rod end on the steering box will not have a slight bend down ward at the ball joint socket end. Also the steering damper bracket will have small "U" bolts if a 13 mm wrench fits the nuts it's the bad one. The kit is a huge improvement over the older system.

the original style parts are not available any more, if there is a failure the truck gets the new style linkage.

I have 2 bad TREs and the dealer told me they would replace the whole works with the new kit on my dime due to the lift. I just ordered the new linkage from Source automotive.

Just did the upgrade. Got the parts from www.moparsuperstorecenter.com. They sell a complete kit with after market stabilizer for $387. 50+ SH. My local dealer wanted well over $550 for the parts. Here are the new part numbers for those sourcing the parts else where.

52122362AF Tierod kit

6505623AA Hex Nut-3 needed

68039930 Pitman Arm

This is a heavy duty upgrade compared to the Y link setup that came on the early models.

My son just did the front end of his truck with Lukes Links. The seem like a great idea, I am interested to see how they hold up. His is an 01, he did all the tie rod ends.

your mileage may vary
