Timberline Event

Who is this

Had a great time, and saw many familiar faces and some sweet rides. My favorite one was the truck with the hay bale in the back. :D I think I will be putting the Zip Wax and washing mit they gave me to good use :D :p

I couldn't have found a better way to spend my lunch hours.

What a blast!

All I can say is "WOW"!!

My truck won the "Best Engine Award" award at last year's event, but very few trucks were entered in the show 'n shine last year. This year, however, there were at least 25 trucks entered in the show 'n shine contest, and there were a lot of really beautiful and nicely detailed rigs out in that parking lot. I was really shocked to find that I had won the "Best Engine Award" again!!!

I want to publicly thank the good people of Timberline Dodge for hosting this event, Dave and Diana Perea for all the work they put into organizing the show 'n shine competition, and all the vendors for their VERY generous prizes. Timberline Dodge put on a quite a party, with all the food and an ENDLESS SUPPLY supply of door prizes!

My folks, who are visiting from California, came along to see what all the hoopla was about. We hit the road at 5am. I thought for sure my mom would be bored with the long ride and all the "truck stuff", but she told me she had a wonderful time and she was glad she went. Before the show 'n shine, she even picked up a rag and wiped down my bumper for me, while my dad polished the grille for me. They really enjoyed meeting all of the great people there.

So, anyway, I must say THANKS again to all those who worked so hard and spent a lot of time and money to put on this event. I will definitely be back for the next one!

I'm back from flippen burgers and dogs all day, it was a good outing. However, I missed the real outing today with you guys. I couldn't hardly wait to get home and see (read) how things went!

Come on guys, don't keep me in suspense, tell me who won in all the different events and give all of us the lo-down an all the acitivies.

How about some pictures?

Waiting inpatiently!

I agree with Andy

I too, just want to say what a great time in Portland. My first event, put a lot of faces with the names, but probably already forgot a bunch too  . Timberline definitely is a supporter of the CTD Dodge, they spent a lot of bucks putting this on at no cost to us. The vendors did the same, and I believe the venders donated well in excess of $1000 in prizes, and Timberline spent $1000's. I publicly wanted to say thank you, and recommend to the members that we support those dealers and vendors that support us in this manner. Great food, Great Company and 18. 7 MPG, what more could you want for a beautiful Saturday in the Great Pacific Northwest.

I won the best work truck category, and a big thank you goes out to Jardine Engineering for the prize in this category, a complete 4" Exhaust system, yah hoo :) :) :) Thank you Jerry.

Till we meet again, keep the shinny side up. May not be appropriate to say that after viewing some of the trucks there, I think both top and bottom were equally as shinny :D

Great truck, Shelby!

Shelby, I was very impressed with the way your truck is set up. It looks like a very practical, user-friendly utility bed, and I bet it must make the job a lot easier when everything has its place, the storage system is well planned out, and it's constructed right. Cool strobe lights, too.

Andy

I just want to start out by saying what a beautiful day for a wonderful fun filled event. The food was great, the company was fantastic and Timberline Dodge did a superb job in making this all possible. Thank you Dave and Diana Perea for all of the hard work you did on putting the show 'n shine together.

My truck won the "Peoples choice award. " This was a very high compliment because there were a lot of beautiful trucks there that people put a lot of time and effort into to prepare for this event. I also would like to thank Power Vision for the great mirrors that went along with this award. Like Shelby said, I also recommend that we support these dealers and vendors that are continuously supporting us.

Thanks again for the great day and the great company.

Thanks Andy. Yea, that is the best truck I have ever had the pleasure to work out of. I don't know if I mentioned, but it is pretty much a custom one off. The basic design started life as a flat bed, and then I sketched out what I wanted and they built it. Harder to maintain all of that aluminum than I thought. Some might of noticed there were parts of the bed that did not get buffed out, just ran out of time. I got several suggestions for buffing and polishing, still looking for more. Everything so far is labor intensive and I have not really found anything to bring it back to like new. Part of the problem is the hard water here, can't even hose the mud and dirt off after returning from the field without getting white spots all over the bed and truck for that matter.

Question for you Andy. Are your valve covers powder coated, or painted. Doesn't matter, still very trick looking.

Shelby

Man am I jealous! All you folks in the NW have all the fun. Nice cool weather most of the year, wolves in the wild, Sasquatch, you name it! If you ever get an NHL franchise I might consider moving up yonder! ;)

Timberline Dodge and the supporting Vendors

Well, after some last minute prodding from both Big Bob and Bill K. I decided to put forth the effort and ready my Ram for the Timberline Dodge rally AND show-n-shine..... as best I could (seeing some of the parts I was counting on were either screwed up by a vendor or didn't arrive on time). Oh well, builds character I guess (although it's a pretty hard lesson to learn sometimes). Anyway, I spent from 4:00PM on Friday until after 2:00AM on Saturday putting my Ram back together, washing it as well as performing some detailing (in the dark. . with the help of flood lights  ). Heck, I wasn't even sure it would run, let alone well... I had so many different systems open on my 24v within the last week or so (that had been yet untested. . waaay too tired) I was worried that I may have overlooked something. I figured what the heck, I'll give it my best shot, if something is wrong I'll just call it a day and pack it in.

Well, I got lucky, everything worked well on my Ram and I had a great day seeing all my old friends as well as finally putting faces to new TDR friends! :) ... and that my friends is what these events are all about... friends!

I was lucky enough to win the Best 4x4 catagory. There were sooo many other trick Rams there... well, let's just say I didn't think it was going to happen.

Shelby, that is one awesome Ram you have! I knew that work truck bed was a one-off unit as there is NO WAY everything could fit that well in an off-the-rack type unit. Sweet! Oh BTW, Andy's engine components were powder coated with transparent blue over the chrome plating.

..... Andy, I've got more ideas, and I'm gunnin' for ya. :D:D:D:D

And last but certainly not least; a very big thank you to Timberline Dodge for hosting this great event and to Dave and Diana Perea for organizing and coordinating the show-n-shine... I know your hard work and effort is appreciated by everyone. :):):):)

I want to give a big "thank you" to everyone that was involved with putting on the event yesterday at Timberline Dodge. The Show 'N Shine was great, the vendors were friendly and first class, and the food was delicious. I even had the pleasure of getting to drive a couple of nice trucks. ( thanks Joe and Mike ) Injectors are coming soon!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!:)

Andy's underhood secret

John already mentioned it, but here's the story behind the blue engine parts: I bought a Cummins chrome kit (my truck is a '97 12-valve), which includes six valve covers, two heater tubes that run above the exhaust manifold, an intake manifold, and an alternator bracket. I took them to a powder coater and had them put a metallic blue over the chrome. I got the idea from a show truck I saw at a SCORE Off Road Show about 20 years ago (any of you Southern Californians rememer those shows at the Anaheim Convention Center?) This show truck I saw had a light bar on the roof that had this "glow" to it. I asked the owner what kind of paint it was, and he said it was powder coated over chrome. I kept that idea in the back of my mind for 20-odd years!

There is one thing you should know if you're interested in doing this: The chrome on one of my valve covers bubbled up from the base metal during the baking process. The powder coater told me that is a sign of poor quality chroming. I bought a single replacement valve cover and brought it to the powder coater (Worco Powder Coating in Long Beach, Calif. ). That valve cover bubbled up, too, but not as bad. I put that valve cover at the back of the engine where it's not as noticeable. Part of the intake manifold bubbled up, too, but it's at the backside, facing the firewall. So, be advised that there is a risk involved if you buy the Cummins Chrome Kit and have it powder coated. Some or all of the parts could be ruined, depending on the quality of the chroming process. It wasn't cheap, either. The Chrome Kit is around $350, and the powder coating cost around $300, if memory serves me right.

If it comes out right, it really looks fantastic. In the sunlight, the chrome reflects the light back through the blue, and the parts seem to "glow" with a "satinny" look. Many people think the parts are anodized.

Yes, we need a hockey team here!

Swamp Rat, I too would like to see an NHL team here in the northwest. We do have the Thunderbirds. I don't know anything about them, I think they're an IHL team,

John, I know the competition gets more fierce every year. I haven't added a single thing to my truck since last year. Believe me, I only entered the show 'n shine for the fun of it, I really didn't think my truck would win anything. The poor thing doesn't get babied like it used to, I put 600 miles a week on it, with a few miles a day on a muddy/dusty gravel road, no garage, 86,000 miles, and a cracked windshield. Just wait until I build that "dream garage" and get a second vehicle to commute with! Then I can start really fixing up my truck, and putting all my customizing ideas to work. Next year? We'll see! ;)

Congratulations on your win, I'm glad you decided to come.

Andy

If I had known more about what goes on at these events, I would have entered my truck. I surely would have won best Standard CAB. Thinking about it, maybe I had the only standard CAB there. It was nice to meet everyone and see the trucks. When is the next event in the NW? Snow King

Andy, I was only kidding (as usual). You need to understand your Ram as well as Dave Perea's Ram are benchmarks that we all compare too. BTW, it was nice meeting your parents too.

Hey Andy, I thought the transparent powder coating was a relatively new process. Oh well, live and learn. I saw they have added these powders to the Eastwood catalog line of powder coating supplies. BTW, $350. for the Cummins chrome kit???? That was a bargain compared to having it custom done (like I did)... and that's excluding the parts!:eek: No regrets though... like Burger King, I got it MY way. :D And the best part... I dealt with a custom shop that I have used off and on for over 20 years now. Queen City Plating ( www.queencityplating.com )... they are the absolute best of the best! They perform work beyond comparison and treat you and your parts with the utmost care. Expensive but worth it! :)

Snow King, it was a pleasure meeting you yesterday. BTW, the Ram next to me won the Best 4x2 award... it was a standard cab dually (I don't remember what year however, I do know it was at least a '98). In addition, James Brown (NW BOMBer) had his Flame Red '01 regular cab Sport Ram (with matching tent style canopy) there... he was backed into the far corner of the show-n-shine lot where I was parked. I hoped you all checked out James' Ram, it has more accessories and upgrades than you can imagine.

Darn... speaking of which, I forgot to check out James' new SS ladder bars and Greg's Geno's Garage storage drawer. The good part is. . they both live close. :)

Accessorizing...

John,

At some point I'm going to have to compile a list? I have the truck "book. "

I've done a lot of electrical work installing accessories tieing into the factory socket's, fuse's, and relay's. "Painless wiring?" What's that? I have to refer to my "updated" factory wiring schematic's to see what I changed?

Darn... speaking of which, I forgot to check out James' new SS ladder bars and Greg's Geno's Garage storage drawer. The good part is. . they both live close.
The ladder bars haven't been installed, yet. I've been waiting for powder coating of some of the steel components. Hopefully this week, definitely before I leave for Alaska, they'll be installed.

I have  parts from Australia that I'm going to install.

Your Welcome Chris, I think you dont have anything to worry about with your transmission if you add the 275's. You will enjoy the extra towing power!

Also thanks to Joe for the test drive of his rig. It was fun, it made me want to start spending alot of money again  and guess what, im going to do it!

I also would like to thank the people at Timberline and Dave for all the work they have done. This was the 2nd year that Ive attended and ,If Im not mistaken, only the 2nd year having a Show nShine. It just keeps getting better. It was great seeing old faces and meeting new members as well.

John, I liken it to a 50's drag racer having the fastest slingshot dragster at the track. At first, he blew everyone away, but then the competition caught up to him. At this "race" he got lucky, but eventually, he will be a non-contender unless he makes an effort to "keep up with the Joneses".

Thanks for the complements, but I really thought my truck had seen better days. Last year I told myself I was hanging it up, but this time I entered with an "Oh, what the heck" attitude. I didn't even coat the tires or polish any aluminum. Boy, back in L. A. , I had it made, I used to remove the wheels and polish them one-by-one in the warehouse and wash & wax the truck on the clock! My co-workers thought I was nuts!

Until my self-imposed budget constraints are lifted (I'm trying to save to buy a house), my truck will continue to drift to the back of the pack. But it doesn't mean I'm done for good! Don Garlits and Don Prudhomme made their share of comebacks. I'll be back! ;) Once you get bit (or in my case "re-bit") by the bug, there's no quitting. It's too much fun!
