It has come time for me to finally purchase a log splitter. I have been think of going towards one with a Honda engine. I am torn between 2. One is the Oregon 22 or 28 ton. The other one is Ruggedmade. If I buy a Ruggedmade I would have to either pick it up or have it delivered to my house. they only offer 1 type here on the west coast which is electric start and has a Lifan motor. This one is much cheaper than the pull start one. I am not familiar with Lifan except for what I can find on the web. Anyone have the Rugged made?

Are you referring to the Oregon company that makes saw/parts? If so they make a good product at least to that end. You generally get what you pay for. Hydraulic pump specs are as important as engine specs IMO. Many of the cheaper splitters utilize undersized pumps to cut costs.

i have a 27ton yard machines one, it has a 2 speed pump, and i have yet to find a wood it won't split. got mine from Craigslist for 500$. it has a honda 160, and if good for the most part, no issues really. pull it and go.

Splitting Hardwood or Softwood???

Honda engine hands down for me. The "Lifan" is a Honda clone from what I see.

Some discussion here....https://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/input-on-lifan-engines-sold-at-home-depot.251618/

Hope I'm not to late to make a opinion on my recent purchase of a splitter and its use vs a kennitc splitter that I used in Montana to split wood there. I ask the same question as Mike, Hard or Soft wood ?

the SPLITFIRE Splitter was fine for pine and feeding a regular home built in fireplace. It was however severely lacking when I started to cut wood for a Outside boiler Furnace. I didn't even bother to bring it to Indiana where we in installed a Heatmaster wood furnace and needed to cut and split some REAL WOOD in larger chunks. the furnace will except 26" long wood by whatever you can get through the furnace door and also depends on what a guy can pick up weight wise without loosing a NUT or two. the difference in wood hardness is amazing ASH, WALNUT, HICKORY, OAK, MAPLE will put a splitter to the test. I was looking for a splitter that was as fast as the Splitfire but able to split the big stuff, I was told by a guy at a outdoor show in Indy GOOD LUCK FINDING THAT MACHINE.

I continued to browse the show and found a guy that said to let him come to my place and we'd spend the day splitting wood. He showed up and we split. every nasty ugly POS round of wood I could find and this splitter WALKED THROUGH EVERYTHING WITHOUT HESITATION or really not a large decreeable change in the sound of the motor.

SOLD!!! he didn't even have to tow it back to the shop we bought it on the spot, while not the fastest it still is impressive with some of the features of its hydraulic system MOST OF ALL THE POWER!!!
