My 48re is acting pretty weird, well weirder than normal and was wondering if you guys think its time to throw in the towel. Now the truck has only 95k on the odo and whoever owned it before was towing a fiver, obvious due to the holes in the bed for the fifth wheel mount and the 7 pin outlet. Reading many threads about towing fiver with a 2500 has convinced me that is not a good idea, and am pretty sure the previous owner might had pushed the GVWR or beyond. So enough background here is the problem,

When I back out of a parking spot (maybe 40 feet) then place the truck in drive it will stay in 1st and 2nd gear until the RPM hits 2. 5k to 3k then slam into the next gear. It only does this cycle once, reverting to the normal operation until the next short reverse session. I can place it in neutral and rev the motor to 2. 5k and 3k and back and drive and it will prevent me from having to break the speed limit on base (only 30) to "fix" the problem. This has been an issue since I purchased it in 'o6, figuring I'll just fix it when it finally craps out.

Now it seems to pause between 3rd and 4th shift, almost like its hunting for the right gear during highway speeds. I'm not towing and acceleration is smooth. Is there a common denominator within the transmission that will cause this? Or is this 48re just telling me to get lost and look for a replacement because its done in the next 4k? I'll be buying a TT next week and will be a little worried about this stocker kicking the bucket on the road with the family. Oh also, the issopro trans gauge I installed never reads over 180 so I don't think temperature is an issue.

I have priced replacements from ATS/Gorend/Suncoast/and BD and it looks like I'm out at least 2. 5k unless someone knows this problem is a shot valve body, etc. Long read I know, thanks! :D

Cant help you with Problem diagnosis but you might want to add DTT transmissions to your list Abbotsford BC is close to you and is one of the premier builders. I will be following this post as sooner of later I will be having problems with my 90+K 48 RE

I have a friend that will only take his truck to DTT, and we live near San Fransisco, he said there customer service and products are enough for him to make the drive. For what its worth his DTT 47RE lasted 120k trouble free till he got it over 300deg sustained in Glamis, and then limped it home 12 hours and will now be towing it back up to DTT to have it redone. His own fault for breaking as I would not expect any transmission to hold up to that. Definitely worth a call though.

H Barlow pointed me in the direction of DTT. I have made calls to them about rebuilds and questions on stock trans issues. They have been MORE than good about helping. This is why im going to have them do it when the time comes to do my trans. MOST OF ALL THEIR REPUTATION STANDS FOR IT'S SELF (GREAT)

Dave, you may have more than one issue here. Your 04 should have the engine mounted APPS, which in conjunction with the throttle valve cable adjustment, could be causing your problem.

I would have the trans serviced, all new fluid, filter, bands adjusted. You may want the governor pressure solenoid replaced also... they are about $150. 00. Then see how it behaves, if the shifts are still hanging it may be the throttle valve cable, here is a link on adjustments, (you may want to do this first, before the service), read down through the posts: https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ions-2003-2007/224368-jerky-transmission.html

If you are still having issues you may need to replace the APPS, do not buy from Dodge, buy it here: Timbo APPS.

If you are still uneasy about spending money on this, DTT is an excellent choice, but there are also some local builders who could set you up, Speak with Bryan or Josh at Diesel Power Products. Jess

Outstanding info, thanks guys! I'll give DTT a call and see what they offer and how much that will punch a hole in the wallet. In any case I wanted to get a pacbrake installed to help with the plethora of downgrades around this area. Reading other threads, they state there are upgrades required to allow the TC to stay locked. Do most replacement transmissions come prepped for this install or will I have to have this built into the package? Thanks again, :)

Dave

The packbrake controller will be a separate electronic controller that will lock the TC when the exhaust brake is engaged. It wont be part of a built transmission though DTT does have controlers available. Had the PRXB on my last truck, deffenitly a great choice!

Had same 1&2 shift hunt problem

For me it was the governor pressure solenoid at 106k. However, when you replace that it is recommended that the Governor pressure sensor be replaced at the same time as they apparently tend to go at about the same time. Fairly straight forward install. did it in about an hour and a half. 30 mins was spend waiting for the fluid to completely drip out.
