8 years ago and 95000 miles I sent fifth gear shrapnel through this poor thing cleaned it out put new gears on and ran it . And at least the knockoff fifth gear nut retainer isn’t worth using it still lets the nut cone loose I did another set of fifth gears about 4 years ago when I did the clutch the nut had backed off just enough to let the gear move and chipped thee teeth

When I had the 5th gear nut come off my NV4500 years ago, I put the Dodge updated nut on but I also loaded the splines of the main shaft gear with JB Weld Quik before I installed the gear. That tiny amount of backlash on the splines is what wiggles the nut loose. Be interesting to see what I find when I open this thing up again.

Got it opened up doesn’t look too bad inside cheap beating hasn’t failed there would have been no problem. Going to go ahead and replace the fifth gear while I’m inside anyway .

When I rebuilt my NV4500 I secured the 5th gear with the OEM nut and the fifthgearrepair.com fix. It seemed to be the only 100% guarantee to keep the nut in place. I see his site is gone now. Bummer as it was a good idea. When I ordered it from him he told me that cheap inferior chinese fakes were surfacing. That they were not hardened like his were. That he had been in limbo with the US patent office and they would not take him out of pending status for close to ten years. He stated he was about to give up on it. It looks like he was.

Patents actually offer virtually zero protection against someone ripping off your idea. Not just the Chinese copycats either. Your own American corporations are also happy to steal your idea (personal experience-and I had a signed agreement from them-worth nothing as it turns out). Because they know the cost of you defending your patent is way more than anyone can really afford and they already have corporate lawyers. There is a very small niche market for actual high-quality, made in your own shop products. No way to get rich so all you can hope for as a small guy is to eke out a little profit and have fun developing and making your product. Plus the value of learning what you need to learn to do it. And developing a reputation as a "quality first" guy. Thats it. Forget about patents. Those are for the already rich corporate guys.

It alerts them to what to steal that on which they hadn’t had previous intelligence.

Classic “fake genuis” Albert Einstein worked in the patent office. Had his name attached to, what, one patent? He was just bright enough to ascertain the work of others.

i don’t think jb weld will stand the flex or the shock load that gear will take . I’ve tried it on a few things like that and it just won’t work. The fifth gear retainer will work but it will still let gear and nut move just a little . I torqued the nut down with a 1/2 inch breaker bar and 3 foot cheater and it was finger tight when I took it apart this time . Green loctite on the gear the shaft and nut with the super nut will work

Is the green loctite sleeve retainer? I thought the backlash on the new 5th gear and new fully splined shaft on my rebuild was excess. And that looks like the same retainer I used. Of all the choices it seemed to be the only one that would truly work for sure. I fortunately had a 4 foot torque wrench good for 600 ftlbs. The result of owning a john deere 450 bulldozer. The bulldozer is gone and sold. Parts prices on that big yellow thing meant moving the decimal twice to the right verses a boat's one place. LOL Watching your progress. Thanks for posting.

there are two different green loctite I try to get the highest rated one you have to gear the gear with a Torch to get it off . I’m still working on getting the parts to overhaul this thing parts are expensive for everything but I figured might as well do a full blown rebuild this time

I went through the fifth gear nut problem quite a few years back
tried all the fixes, even tack welded the SOB on, which, when you understand why it fails, tack weld is prone to fail also
Finally got all the parts I needed for a rebuild including a fully splined (under 5th gear) main shaft.
200K miles later and haven't given it another thought.
Not sure if these guys are in business any more or not but were a great resource for parts and information
