I have an 01 ETH 4X4, and I currently have 4. 10's.

(1) Should I go with 3. 54's or 3. 73's? I'm running 315's and (of course) I have the NV5600

(2) Do I need a "reverse rotation" for the front and it is a Dana 60, right?

(3) Since I have 4. 10's, do I have to get a new carrier for the higher gears that I'm changing to?

(4) Anyone want 4. 10's who would be willing to trade? These have 40,XXX miles and I have the Dana 80 rear with disc brakes.

Thanks for any input.

Stay with 4.10's

If you are running 315's then you would be (IMO) making a mistake. 315's and 4. 10's are the equivalent of 265's and about 3. 69's (if they made such a thing). The 4. 10's do a great job of offsetting the 35" tires. But if you are set on it then go with the 3. 73's. 3. 55's wouuld be way too tall for 315's. PS. If you are downsizing tires than by all means go with the 3. 55's:)

I have 315's and 3. 54's,I almost want a shorter gear. This thing's got gobs of power and I hardly did anything to it,... yet. I tow alot of trailers and have no problems with my gears, except on the freeway then I need 7th gear and maybee 8th! IMO unless your yankin' a D6 regularly the 4. 10 are a waste of valuable speed, not to mention MPG!

How fast do you want to go on the freeway that you need a different gear? I just had my 3. 54's replaced with 4. 10's since I went from the stock 265's to a set of 36's

With the larger tires and the 3. 54s the thing felt like a dog. I know I had the power still but I felt like I was lugging the motor around.

3:73's for me..........

I had the 4:10's from the factory and swapped someone for 3:54's. Neither gear felt right, one to low the other too high. Because of my utility bed I am unable to change tire size so I finally had the correct gear put in.

From a 4 series gear to a 3 series you will have to change the carriers. That's what makes it so pricey. I got lucky in the swap I also got the carrier and when I went to 3:73's I only had to purchase the gear set.

From 4:10 to 3:54 is roughly a 600 RPM difference. 3:73 is right in the middle.

The carrier split is between the 4. 10 and the 4. 56

Going from 4. 10 to 3. 54 or 3. 73 you should not have to change the carrier.

Now there's a possibility.......

Never thought about the different rear ends. Mine is the Dana 80. Don't the 4x4's have 2 different axles? Anyway, I'd gladly eat crow to get the real info out to the membership.

Chipstien, as I said I tow alot so my mileage is combo of towing and not towing, I see about 14. 5 all around. The trailer's ave. 5,000#'s and I have a heaaaaaaaaaaaaaavy foot,I do 80 mph on the expressway, trailer or not, more if i have to pass:D

Bill_l,

I have 315's with my 3. 54 gears, to me it hardly feels like a dog. The way my truck sits right now, dump bed, tool box(loaded),and all other acc. it weighs 7,900#'s. With just the slight mods. I've done,I'm still amazed the power those two boxs make!!Can't wait for the $$ for the B-1 and DDIII's thats gonna' be the I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER !!!

I am going to be changing to the 410 ratio if anyone has their old set close to me on the west coast I'll perchase them from someone. dana 80

Judging from the sig both should have the 80. I am 99. 999% positive that 2500 QC come with 80 and reg cabs have 70's. Of course all 3500 should have 80's.

Ramthis1, thanks. I had a Cherokee with the 3. 54 and a 4. 0 liter and put a 4" lift and 31" tires and it was the biggest dog. Couldn't use OD and the trans because it wouldn't pul it. Now I know that is not a Cummins but it scared me anyway so I made sure to get the 4. 10's. I have been very happy so far. :)

different axles...

That is something I had not thought about I have the 60 in the front and the 70 in the rear.

I know that the carrier split is the same on these as it was for the 44 and the 9 1/4 that were in my 1500.

At least that is what everything I have been told and have read has shown me.

Bill_L, You have an automatic? My truck has a 70 under it... . and an automatic somewhere in front of that..... and I am planning to change the 3. 54s out for 4. 10s, with an overdrive eventually.

Yeah, Mine is an auto. With the 4. 10s and the 36's I see no need for an overdrive. Then again I don't really plan to do much towing with my truck. or any super long drives.
