It's time for new tires for Big Red. I've gotten about 35,000 miles on this set of Toyo Open Country MT's. I've 35x12. 50x17's.

I tow my toy hauler, sometime even with Jeep in it, so about 9000-10,000 pounds, so I want load range E. While it doesn't really go offroad that much, it will encounter a dirt road, field, etc. , and I just like the look of a mud tire.

I've had no real complaints with the Toyo and will probably go with them again, but I see I have a few more options for a 35 on 17 load range E this time.

Anyone have any opinions on any of these?

- Kumho Road Venture MT

- Nitto Trail Grappler MT (Mud grappler doesn't look like it has good road manners based on Nitto's site)

Any others I'm missing?

I just had a major problem with Toyo tires but not the E range. My wife's Murano came with Toyo's. She took the car into the dealership for a warranty repair and when she picked it up, there was a note on the order that two of the tires had what appeared to belt separations. I took the car to a tire store that sells Toyo tires and he agree, the belts were separating. After calling the distributor, we were told that they would allow $25 per tire for replacement. There was less than 25% wear on all four tires. The tire dealer also told me that this is not the first of these that he has seen. I told him thanks and ordered a set of Michelins.

I personally will not put Toyos on anything from now on. If there is a recurring issue, they need to own up to it and make it right. Their deal wasn't even a buy three and get the fourth one free.

I just took off (Friday) a 305/75/17 open country A/T from my 2006. I had 285/70/17Michelin LTX M/S2s installed. They have a D load rating, however that just means I can only put 60 psi of air in the tire. The max load of the tire is actually higher then the stock BFs. The ride to work today was like a new truck. No vibration at all, road noise was significatly reduced and the handling was great. Overhead also registered 2 mpg better then I was getting. I will of couse verify on my next fillup. So far I'm impressed with the Michelins and they have a 70,000 mile rating.

There are a lot of manufacturers that now offer e range tires. Personally I like the toyo's, they have held up through more crap and for more miles than any tire I have run all with zero problems. The only downside I have seen is they are heavy compared to other d and even e range tires. That extra rotating mass makes taking off a little tougher and burns more fuel.

Alan, which toyo did you have and what was the load range? Im curious if its the lighter load ranges that are having the problems. Also how old were the tires? I have been seeing a lot of belt separation on tires around 5 years old, im just curious about all the aspects of your problem. I ask cause between myself and several friends we have collectively run over 500k miles with absolutely no trouble. So im curious about your troubles

If you're happy with them why change? For every brand there are always people who love them and some nitemare stories. Just like truck brands and travel trailers/RV's...

I'm just buying my second set of Firestone Destination MTs in 315-70-17. They are load range E with very deep tread. I liked the first set, but want another set with studs for winter. The first set has a lot of life left, so they will go back on in the spring.

Good point, and I said I probably will do the same, just curious if anyone had experience with those others. My only complaint with the Toyo's was I only got about 35,000 miles from them, and that seemed low to me.

Mhannink,

They were the TOYO 20 inch, low profile. I believe they were load range C. The tires were less than a year old. Of course, dealers don't do tire warranties so you have to go to a tire dealer.

Unless the tires were sitting in a warehouse somewhere before the car was built, they should have been new. The Michelin replacements have been flawless. They are not wearing as fast as the Toyos did.

My 80,000 mile projected life Michelin Latitude's will be lucky to deliver 45K on our Honda Pilot. They cost me $164 ea @ Costco.

That ends my Michelin buying experience.

Toyo should have taken care of you, regardless. I'd contact their home office.

We did. No joy with the US Home office.

Michelin E Range have done well on my trucks. Every set I've had on my

2wd 2500s have all gone over 100K. I rotate every 5K and have the front end alligned when I first buy the truck.

Im due for some tires and my vote is for BFGs all terraines... . Im getting the E range now, they only had D 4 yrs ago... . I have about 42. 000 miles on them now. and never had an ounce of problems with them

I have 315/75/16 toyo m/t on my truck and so far now have 65,000 kms (almost 41,000 miles) on them. Probably another 15,000-20,000km (10,000-12,000 miles) left in them. I've also spun them a few times so that shortens the life a bit as well. I really like them as they really suit my all around use like towing heavy loads, work in the fields, sled pulling, etc. I'm buying another set next year. Also the thick carcass (hence the heavy weight) the toyo's have prevented a 1. 5" screw that i found in the tread from puncturing the tire.

If you're happy with them, use them again. The tire life isn't all that different from other brands.

Goodguys75, the BFG's aren't available in my size and E :(

Not trying to debate this to death, just finding it interesting to see what options there are, and I came across this one tonight... can't say I've ever heard of Federal Couragia! Couragia M/T - OnlineTires.com

Interesting, I've never heard of federal tires either. I just looked at the site you had listed, be a brand for you to try. There's no reviews yet. I'll check the site again in the next couple months once people start buying more and posting reviews.

I had a set of TOYOs on my dually 3500. WORST wearing tires I ever owned, noisy, poor handling, rut tracking garbage soft tread tires. Hardly got 20,000 miles out of them. Put Michelins on and they went well over 60,000 on the same truck pulling heavier loads.

Gonzo 1066: what type of toyo's were they? Some of them don't last at all and some do last quite a bit.

I second the Toyo going short on distance... sorry dont know which model I have... but the current tires are bald... Im interested in which Michelins he went to.

OK. . I will sure My personnel History with My 03 Factory Michelin 40k ,BF 285 ATs 25k, Toyo 285 ATs 30k, Toyo 285 HTs 26k with another maybe 20k left. The Toyo HTs (E) have been the best tired I have ever owned in My entire history of Trucks,They handle nice on the pavement and in wintry conditions, they are toughest tire I have ever had ,We have pulled nails and screws form them that we pickup at landfills and not had 1 leak.

I'm following this thread because my OEM Michelins are nearly ready for replacement. They still have legal tread but as I get ready to tow to AR next month, the extra grip of new tires would be nice. I never put the spare on the road so all miles are on the original 4 mounted. I have close to 65K miles, over half towing an 11K fifth wheel with a ton + on the pin. I think the mileage has been great. If the spare had been on a chrome rim and included in rotation they likely would have gone over 85K miles. I'm looking at Tires just like the stock ones but at Les Schwab they want $1500 out the door for the set of 4.

TC, that's some decent mileage from the Toyo HT... is your truck a 2wd or 4wd ??

On my 4wd, I barely got 20k from my Toyo AT 285/75/17 E.

Even though they prorated me at about 50%, at $300 each, I am looking for something that will last LONGER.
