Competition getting tst box

I have been playing with the diesels for a few years now. I just love my 04, but now I think it is time to play. I'm trying to set something up at the local track and DHRA here in Alaska. Sooo...

I just bought a 98 4X4 12v reg cab auto. It's in pretty rough shape(perfect for a sleeper) and has a blown rearend. I want to start racing with it and have a couple questions.

I need a rearend. With the Auto an 4. 10 ratio, I'm thinking Dana 80 with probably a Detroit locker, any other suggestions??

The bed is in BAD shape, and thought about putting on a flatbed. Do the DHRA regs allow that?

Thanks and hopefully somday I'll be able run with the big dogs!

ohh ya, and since this is my first 12V, any performance recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

if allyour going to do is race it and some street use drop the 80 go with a 60 with a spool and 354 gears the 410 will be hard to get the top end you want

another vote for 3. 54's, but I don't know about the Dana 60... if you're serious about this, that poor rear is gonna be seeing 1000+ ftlbs of torque...

Forrest

thing to remeber with racing is your not putting that much straing on the rear end like pulling ore carring heavy loads and you can drop the 8 lug rims and huge brake drums

the lil red is holding up good so far will see how it does after a year or so once we get all the bugs out of the truck

George

Thanks for the tip. I will see what I can do on the 3. 54's. The 70 should work just fine then too. I would like this to be bullet proof. Who knows I might try some sled pulls as well.

If you even think you might try to pull go with the 80.

You can run a flat bed. But if you are going to build a race truck, figure out what type of racing you like the most (indexed, handicapped or heads up) and look for the classes that you figure you can best compete in and study the rules for those classes. Don't limit yourself on the Association you race with NHRA, IHRA and DHRA races will give you an incredible amount of experience. Not to mention one really busy summer if you wish!

This is what I did and now I am going to be able to race in IHRA, DHRA and some NHRA races.

12v Mods... . Call Piers, Open Wallet, install parts... . repeat!

All out race truck, Stoopid pump, 370's, twins, fire ring the head/block and you should be good for some fun!

I should have known!! lol Guess I better Start saving penny's. This is gonna hurt, but in a good way!

I'm taking the 04 to the track tonight to play with my Ford buddies. This will be the first time down the track, should be fun!!!

Is it possible to set up a truck for pulling and dragging, and be competitive in both events?? Or is it best to just be the best at 1 event?

Its possible-we are just waiting for someone to do it.

GO FOR IT!

Someone get Terry Coppess to the drag strip, we will find out pretty quick.

Impressive numbers Kantdrive!

Dana 80 it is!!! I just found one and picked it up!! $800 3. 54 LS with 96,000 miles on it out of a 97. How tough are these factory Limited slips??

Factory limited slip is both limited and slips. It's not for any kind of serious use (pulling, racing, mudding, whatever).

A detroit is a good option, but not very streetable. The ARB air-locker is probably your best bet.
