Well the time has come to do somethign about Cat as it is about plugged up so that is next weeks project.

I understand from other posts that the cat is hard to get off. Any suggestions on easy ways to get it off? Also What about just replaceing the thing with a piece of three in pipe and a four inch adapter instead of pounding the stuffing out of it. ? If I replace the cat with a pipe what does that do to the sound of the truck.

Easiest way is to heat the ends of the cat red hot with a oxy/acetylene torch and wiggle it apart. Some people cut slits in the ends of the cat with a grinder or just sawzall it off. I don't like this because it makes the cat hard to reuse if the smog police ever say you need it, if you have to buy a new one expect to pay around $1000. I bought the pipe, adaptor and clamps from Napa for around $25. Leave the muffler intact if you want it quiet. With a pipe instead of a cat the sound will be different but not any louder.

They sell the pipe by the foot, I ordered a foot extra, glad I did, it was cut with a hacksaw at about a 20° angle. The reducer is a stock item. The pipe size you want is the same size that goes into the muffler.

Be aware that when you go through emmissions in Phoenix every year, the cat must be there. That's why I gutted mine. If you do decide to go the test pipe route, make sure you use band clamps instead of the u-bolt clamps that make it very hard to get off.

Just measure the length of where the cat goes onto the down pipe to the end of the muffler, get a 3" piece of pipe that is the same length, get it flared on one end to fit over the down pipe, clamp it and put the cat/muff in storage.

OOOOHHHHHHH YYYYYYYYEEEEESSSSSS, now your cookin'

You probably will have to put some heat on the pipe as mentioned to wiggle it loose. The sound is louder, but that is totally subjective ;) .

you could also go to the dealer and order the test pipe P/N 52019170-AB cost about $45. 00 works great .

I used a 2in ratcheting strap to apply lots of pressure then wiggled the he!! out of it. Then used a long peice of sucker rod (rebar) and a BFH (big freakin hammer) to gut it.

Thanks for the advice on how to get this thing off. I am going to try to get the thing off this weekend.

Thanks for the help.
