My 06 4x4 steering box has been leaking a while, starting to be worse. Stock steering with an after market steering stabilizer installed. What boxes will fit ? Is there any information on what it takes to replace it ?
I bought the heavy duty Mopar gear 68170214AA which is a bigger unit than what came on the truck. It comes with the pitman arm and a tie rod end that you use to adapt to the older y style linkage. If you upgrade to the new 08.5 linkage, you don't need to use the tie rod end they sent with it. Beyond that, it uses original hoses and mounting holes. My original steering pump is handling it very well, but I've read where some have installed a newer pump.
I checked the part number for prices and why do most places want to charge you a core charge on a NEW steering box? Also, will this for a 4x4, 2007, 2500?
When I installed the larger box, which fits 03+, the stock pump not up to the task and the steering took noticeably more effort to turn. Installed the upgraded Mopar pump that is even more money then the box but now everything works well together and feels good.
The box loosens up after some use. It will depend on how good the pump actually is, they vary so much. I figured mine would need replacing as it was leaking with the Borgeson box, installed the OE big box and the leaks quit. Put the Borgeson box on my sons 05 that had a pump leaking with the stock box, it quit leaking. Go figure, the PS pumps are just picky for some reason.
