What is the procedure for advancing the injection timing on the 12v engine.

How many degrees would be best. (AKA how many teeth). I am looking for fuel economy. I tow occasionally but when I do, it is usually about 10-12k. I have 3. 55 and a 5spd. My stock fuel plate is about 1/16th of an inch foreword from stock position. I plan on getting a #11 or a #12 fuel plate. I do alot of HWY travel. All the info I can get will be helpful.

I would go to 16 degrees. Do yourself a favor and go with a #10 plate. Do you have any other mods? If not i would free up the intake and exhaust. Before you do anything get yourself a set of good gauges. (boost and pyrometer)

I have AMSOIL oil, airfilter. swisscheesed intake box. Lost my kitty, and have a nice flow through muffler. Have boost gage now, fixing to install pyro. In the near future I will put 4in exhaust. will not install plate without a pyro though. But, will advance timing raise EGT's and will it help fuel econ. ps. 1997, 2500 ext. cab. 4X4.

Is changing timing as simple as pulling the front cover, and rolling the pump back. Reason I am asking is. I am fixing to attack the "Killer Dowel Pin" and I am going to remove bumper and radiators and fan... ect. Going to do engine flush and tune up. Just got this truck in June. has 138,000 miles on it. I will be putting new clutch and transmission behind it this spring before I move to Oregon. in the mean time, I will be making several trips from Oklahoma to Oregon. I average about 17mpg. I thought it would be higher, but its a hell of a change from 9-10 mpg i was getting with a ( hush, I own a cummins now) GMC 350 vortech. I would really like to get about 20-22 mpg.

You should set timming with a dial indicater or spill port method. You can find your tdc mark, pin the pump, breaks loose the pump gear and rotate the engine oppisite direction of engine rotation about 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch and then tighten the gear down. Make sure to clean the pump shaft taper at the gear as well as the pump. Make sure you un-pin the pump before you do your final torque. (165ft lbs) That should get you about 2 to 3 degrees advance. Thats the backyard way of setting timing. Hope this helps!... ... Brad

There is a real nice write up with pics somewhere. Possibly http://www.dodgedieseldatabase.com/ - great site with lots of info. I'd do a pump timing search on the 12v forum and you'll find it.

The advice I've seen is you'll need to beef up the clutch if you start cranking up the hp. That's why I'll be stock in the fueling dept. until the clutch or transmission offers an opportunity for upgrading, if you get my drift.

N,

Removing the bumper, radiator, intercooler, etc. is not at all necessary to tab the KDP.

I am going to do front end work and replace with Mavrick bumper. Also want to take a look at the truck and see if anything else is in need of TLC, I need this truck to be very reliable. I am one of those people who likes to fix things right the first time. :)
