I just want some reassurance that I am thinking straight. I have searched and read, read and searched. What I am coming up with is that I do want a boost elbow and a boost fooler box for my 2001 ETH but I do not want a timing box as the Eth engines don't like any more timing advance. Have I got it right? I further have concluded that the ETH responds very well to injectors but won't egt's go up with injectors if I don't increase the boost?

I was thinking the same thing about timing boxes 'till the girlfriend bought me a Comp for a birthday present. Of course I HAD to put it on (and a DZ to keep the temps down). So far, so good. Think of it this way: the head gasket will blow at a certain cylinder pressure, and that pressure is reached more quickly with the ETH because of the higher compression ratio. More fuel, more air, and more advanced timing will all increase combustion pressure. So, if you want a timing box, run less boost (I've got mine set at 38psi), or don't add as much fuel (which needs more boost to stay cool). If you read the signatures at the bottom of the posts, I think you'll see that there's a bunch of us with ETH's and timing boxes with no problems.

And you are correct: More fuel = more heat. More boost = cooler egt's (to a point).

ETH and heavy towing with an Edge - not such a good plan.

ETH and heavy towing with a DD version of the Edge - doable

ETH and heavy towing with large injectors, boost fooler (Edge with the data port unplugged), and a hybrid turbo - good plan.

ETH running empty across the planet with an Edge - good plan.

Gauges, gauges, gauges. Watch those EGT's, keep up on the coolant maintenance, and keep the puke bottle from coating the inside of the radiator with oil sludge.

What Sticks said.

The extra timing of the EZ and that ilk is really only a problem with heavy towing. I run an EZ because I almost never tow (twice in two years).

Personally, I'd run either JUST injectors (and boost fooler) or a injectors+TST on a heavy towing rig. No extra timing needed.

I tow lots with my truck up to 10000 lbs trailers, egt's not a problem unless your pulling hills at 90 mph. If you add timing change your driving style, shift at higher rpm's, pull hills at higher rpm's. At these higher rpm's your turbo is at peak effiency at providing boost and air density there fore reducing egt's.

I'm towing pretty darned heavy (check my signature - it got me excommunicated from the Weight Police  ). If I had it to do over again, I'd go with the Diesel Dynamics True Torque Power Module (TTPM) rather than the Edge EZ (or, if you're going for more, the DD Ultimate Fueling Module instead of the Edge Comp) for a timing/fueling box for towing applications. As you may know, the TTPM is an EZ with DD-specific programming. Ditto the DD UFM and the Edge Comp.
