I have been reading all of the threads about timing,(combustion temps, peak cylinder press. , etc) I wanted to see what most peolpe think about running a timing box like the ez or the smarty on the HO.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about the HO blowing the head gasket once you start to mess with the tiiming. I would appreciate any comment or opinions that can be given. I have found it easier to ask for advice (other personal experiances) than to find out the hard way... thanks guys

I've run both the EZ (39k miles) and now the Smarty. No problems with either. I tow appx. 18k GCVWR. If you are concerned, get the Smarty and run it on even #'s.

I have been running an EZ on mine for more than 80000 miles along with 275 injectors for 25000 before that. It is currently in the shop for a head gasket now with 126000 miles on it, although it seems to only be coolant out at the front corner that a lot of us seem to have had in these model years.

I am running an EZ-Comp and 275's with a 4 inch exhaust. Truck has 163,000+ now and I still have my original clutch and brakes. I have been up to 23,000 lbs with no problems. I average 19. 5 to 21. 5 mpg around town and can get 23. 8 mpg during trips over to Idaho and back.

I run the Comp and never had a problem with a head gasket, I see up to about 30PSI boost. Smoke is controllable with all the different levels. Reliability is good never a problem, but then again some day I do expect to replace a VP. EGT is controllable with the foot :-laf :-laf :-laf

What do you think of the tst vs. the blue chip apb?

I ran an EZ for a while then switched to a CaTCHER then the Smarty. No problems with any of them. I also run a Blue Chip APB. It's quite affective. I've run as high as 40 psi & regularly up to 35. Never had a hint of head gasket problems

Do you think it would be better to get the comp or save my money and buy a smarty with either the tst or apb?

Do you think the tst or apb makes plenty of power by itself and there is really no need for a timing box? I have no clue what I should do.

Either box will make plenty of power, but in my opinion, the throttle responce with the Smarty is more useful in daily driving. For more power after that I would reccomend modrerate injectors over a box because the power delivery is smoother. Formula 1's Mach 4 injectors are working well for many users is daily driving. I hope I haven't confused you more.

how do the mach 4's compare to the dd3's as far as smoke level and hp. I would like to hold off on buying a turbo for now as it was just replaced thanks to dc. :-laf

The Mach 4's smoke less & make more power. It's a pretty amazing injector. I opted for the slightly undersized Mach 3. 8's just to help keep egt's down when towing but I'm not sure that would really have been much of a problem. Do a search on Mach 4's & you will find a lot of reports & not to many complaints. Incidentally, Don says that a Mach 4. 5 will wring all the power the Ho version of the VP44 can make.

Darkhorse, thanks for all the info I obviously have a lot of thinking to do.

BTW I heard/saw the stories about your accident. Your a lucky man! :D How is the road to recovery going?

Recovery is slow because bones take their sweet time healing. The pain has subsided a lot & I'm able to get around fairly well. My Halo brace comes off in 2 months. Oo. I found a replacement truck thanks to CSnyder of this forum. It's almost as nice as the truck I rolled. I guess I'll have a summers worth of projects switching the goodies off my wreck to the new truck.
