I am going to make an appointment to have my timing adjusted for the end of this week. I am wondering if the cover that needs to be removed for this is the same as for the KDP... if so, I'll kill both birds! Thanks guys.

BCFAST, you don't need to remove the timing cover to adjust the timing. All you have to remove to get to the injection pump shaft nut and gear is the oil fillter tube.

OK... cool. Guess I'll be doing the KDP tab-fix on my own. How many hours should a shop charge to change timing? So I know if Im getting a fair deal... .

Expect to pay $250+. Cummins or Dodge won't advance the timing for you, you'll have to find another shop. 15. 5° seems to be the best for fuel economy and power if you aren't racing, sled pulling etc.

Let's turn this into a DIY timing thread... . :p

I really need to advance mine... . and I don't trust just anyone to open up my hood and look around... . plus it would be good to know in case I ever want to bump the timing up a notch all by myself.

yep on that... all that. I paid 268 for timing and it was set wrong and 15. 5 is the best all around.

Matt to DIY you will need a set of tools that set you back more than $250. Miller, Snap-On and Cummins will all sell them to you.

All the info on timing is available on Dave Fritz's site. Last time I looked there was a chart showing engine year/plunger lift/timing degree for the pumps. The procedure is there, along with the tools required.

Of course the factory shop manual has the technique spelled out also.

If you pay to have it done you won't know for sure it was done right. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about service charged and not performed. Buy the tools and do it yourself. It takes a little time but the satisfaction upon completion is well worth it. :)

Once my truck is all fixed up from that #@%$& drunk driver... . I know where my money is going next. At least I'm getting a 24-valve intercooler and two stainless-steel bumpers (front replacement and rear)... . amongst other things. :p

Thanks for the help... . I think I can do 'DIM'. (Do It Myself)
