If I set the timing very high to the point of metallic noise and cut the engine off. Then restarted, and did not hear the metallic noise again... does that mean I did something bad to my head gasket?
If you just started it and idled, I'd say not. With no more fuel than your pump is flowing, and your stock injectors, I'd think you'd have to get up pretty high to do any damage, even under load.
in this case the 12 mm nut in the end of the pump vibrated loose and the engine cut off. when i reinstalled the 12 mm nut and restarted the engine i didn't hear the noise. is it possible that the noise was from the pump and not the engine? otherwise why wouldn't the engine make the noise again unless something changed? (i don't know why the nut backed out, my thought was the shop that tested it didn't have it tight. )
For increased noise level, pull the oil fill cap at idle. Sounds like stuff is going to fly apart at any minute. If the plug comes back out, put some loctite on the threads (make SURE to not get any on the ends).
