Well I broke down and bought the Snap On tool for pump timing. But don't know how - Anybody wanna help?

I have no faith in the timing pin being accurate - looking for alternate method for finding TDC. Maybe pull #1 injector and fabricate a fitting for dial indicator??

Your help appreciated. Gonna go to 15. 5 or 16 degrees.

yep, thats what i do. u can come really close just by feel by putting a thin screw driver in the injector hole. But make sure to buy a injector washer kit before hand, ... u need to put the same size washer in, or change them all to the thin ones and u need to change the return line washer on the injector, ... if not it will leak a bunch. Although i guess if u heated them up with a torch u could get them to work again, but u can buy the whole kit through Piers or your local diesel shop pretty cheap. a dial indicater would be best though for checking TDC #1

I appreciate Reb. B and Illflem's comments.

BUT I need more specific instructions for setting timing.

Don't know where to start.

thanks

Start by removing #1 Valve Cover>

Use the Pin to find TDC #1 JUST FOR REFERENCE

Back the engine off 1/4 turn (counterclockwise from the front)...

Loosen one of the valve adjusting nut and tighen the screw down all the way.

Now, Being very careful roll the engine clockwise until you feel the piston hit the valve.

You will need to make a pointer out of a piece of wire and use one of the oil pan bolts to fasten it, make it point to the damper.

Mark this location on the damper.

Back the valve adjuster out and roll the engine CW 1/4 turn.

Screw the adjuster in the same amopunt as youe did before. ( I forgot to say you need to count the turns so that both times you do it you get it screwed in the same)

Roll the engine CCW until the piston hits the valve. (CAREFUL!)

Mark the damper.

Now you should have two marks on the damper, measure the distance between the marks and find center.

Mark the center.

T he center Is EXACTLY TDC as long as you screwed the adjuster in the same both times.

Make sure that every time you roll the engine CCW roll it at least 30 degrees past TDC before going CW or stopping, this will take up the gear lash between the crank, cam , and pump gear.

Hope this helps

let me know if I need to clarify anything.

Sorry, I posted the wrong link, try this one for very detailed instructions http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1994/18-10-94a.htm

Use this chart to set your timing above stock, 15. 5-16 recommended http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm

What the instructions don't say: Use brake cleaner on the timing gear and shaft to remove all oil before reinstalling.

A very common mistake is forgetting to remove the timing pin after locating TDC and breaking it off.

Thanks illflem & yellowiron - That's just what I needed

I'm sure I'll have more specific questions after I read and digest all that info

thanks
