Hi all, I'm trying to check and set the timing on my friends 97 215HP. I keep coming up with 6. 8 to 6. 9 mm of plunger travel. I've re-read the FAQ several times on the timing procedure, but I can't seem to get a good reading. The engine runs decent, just a little rough idle on start up, so the timing is fairly close I think. I am using the Snap-On timing indicator. Anyone have any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? This is my first timing adjustment, so I need some guidance. Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like you are not subtracting the small dail starting point. Look at the small dail when you are at "0", what does read? It should be around 2, that # must be subtracted from the total lift. You can move the whole indator up and down to set it at an easy point to start from. Remembet that one rotation of the dail is 2mm. count the number of times it does a full rotate.

Thanks for the reply, Bob. I pulled #1 Inj and found the CORRECT TDC. I was using the timing pin and it was throwing me off. Timing is between 14. 5 and 15. I guess it will be fine. Thanks!

This is a procedure that needs to be explained for those of us who haven't attempted it yet. ;)

Thanks,
