Love the site. Long time reader, new member.
I have a 94 with #5TST and the pump turned up 15%. My timing is currently retarded (I think). Around 2600rpm under full throttle she begins to sputter and cough a little white smoke. I soon plan on adding a set of 370's along with delivery valves. My question is, what should I advance the timing to in order to gain optimum performance? Or, should I simply time it to stock specs?

Yes, definatley advance your timing, 16 or 16. 5 deg. works well.

R. ebel, did you notice much increase in performance when advancing your timing? I am expecting to see some improvement, simply due to being able to use the entire power band. Also, any suggestions on delivery valves? I've only found a few places that have them. I'm wondering if some are better than others.

Hello,
I was going to post something like this tonight. I posted a few weeks ago called "why does my truck pop out the exaust"
Piers from BD had several replies on there about the timming. he gave me the settings for the different cpl #s.
Check that out and see if it helps.
Now i have a couple questions, How much did it cost those of you that, have advanced timming, to get it adjusted. A local diesel shop around here told me a minium of 3 hours at 65$ an hour. I think that i can buy a miller timming tool for that price.
Has anyone ever used the miller tools? Is it hard. Does anyone have one for sale?
Well i'll stop for now.
Thanks
Adam

Wih the stock governed speed, I'd recommend 15-15. 5 deg. Your governor is cutting fuel around 2600 and that is a good part of the problem.

Joe, On my 94 it seems that it initialy cut back fuel around 2000rpm (that's where it felt like anyways). When I had my pump turned up I also had them set the fuel governor to 2800rpm. Planning on putting in a governor spring kit soon. I am heading to Vegas in about a month (working out there for a few months). Hoping that you can perform a little magic with quick silver (my truck)! Do you feel that 15-15. 5 degrees will be an optimal setting with the additions I've made (keep in mind the additions to come). By mid summer I'd like to be approaching the 400hp mark. Thanks for the help.

Cummingetme,

For the best delivery valves I'd reccomend you contact Piers at BD Power, here is there website http://www.bd-power.com/ram/index.php

As far as timing goes you're best of to go with Joe Donnellys advice (15 to 15. 5) unless you plan to get the govenor spring kit to get to 4000 rpm, he is the expert and also at 600+++hp #ad

I had BD massage my pump and it came back locked down at 16 deg. , sorry I can't give you a seat of the pants feel for the performance increase in just timing alone, several things were done to my pump at the same time. All I can say is it is STOUT #ad

BigYellow,
Let's see now, 3hrs. x $65/hr = $195. If you find a Miller timing set and puller for that much, then I want to know. I gave a lot more than that for my kit and puller.
However, timing is not that hard. Getting the gear pulled off might be though. I've timed one motor already but it was not in the truck. I am getting ready to time mine with the motor in the truck. The only problem I foresee is that the radiator might make it difficult to pull the gear. Not really sure but I'm gonna find out soon. I also see it as a good time for delivery valves too!

Smoker,

There is more than enough room there to pull the gear. I have set timing on dozens of B5. 9's, and have found that 144 ft-lb is not enough torque for the pump gear nut. I have had them slip slightly at that torque spec. Instead, I torque them at 160 ft-lb. BE SURE the pump shaft and the tapered hole in the gear are clean and dry before torquing the nut. Just a side note, the gear nut size is 1 3/16". 30mm will work too, but the other one is a better fit.

I rarely refer to the timing in degress when I set them. Rather, I do it in mm/lift at TDC. This is more accurate, and gives you a better idea of how much fuel is being injected. The timing system I use is the one where you remove the pushrod, and use the TDC locator. Two dial indicators are used, one for TDC, and one in place of the #1 delivery valve.
