I was wondering what kind of timing would be head gasket safe on a 94 with a full ats auto, 191 DV's and 370s? The truck isnt going any farther with upgrades and is daily driven and doesnt tow much.

Also what is the conversion for thousanths to degrees when using the dial indicator? thanks,

Lance

My suggestion, try to find a shop manuel, I haven't looked in it lately but I do believe I saw something about timing. From time to time (no pun intended) you see the procedure in TDR. My manuel is for a 98 12v might be like yours. I would not go beyond recommended specs. -- email address removed --

16 is working good for me. I personally wouldn't go beyond that. I did finally blow my original head gasket back at about 247k but that was probably mostly from high boost and age. I got it up to about 38 psi while towing in sub-zero weather. I ran it a long time before this with no trouble and lots of towing.

The general rule around here is 16 tops if you are running the stock head gasket and bolts. With studs probably 17 degrees would be OK. I set mine to 15 to be on the safer side since it already has 250K miles. I only run 35 PSI boost on the HX35, planning on switching to a full HX40 soon so about 32 PSI will keep me cool with that turbo since it moves a lot more CFM.

i run 20+ degrees, 190k on the clock and more wot 1/4 mile runs than i can count on stock head gasket and bolts :) just make sure its up to temp and watch the drive pressure. When it blows... ... i'll fix it right.

Thanks for all the info. from everyone. I have some idea now. Dont think he wants to change the gasket so i'm sure he'll want to keep below the break over point. thanks again,
