I am installing the P7100 from my other 97 (which was totaled in an accident up the street from Diesel Dynamics) on my new used 97. This is my first time to compeletly remove and install the pump. I am proficient at timming and I have the gear case cover off to check KDP. (By the way when I loosened the nut holding the pump geat the big washer fell apart. Good thing it did not happen when the cover was on! See pic) Anyway, I am just about ready to pull my pump. Any tips on reinstallation?

I forgot to mention, that my plan is to just set the lift on #1 to 5. 7mm and install it. Is there any reason why this wont work? All the talk about timing pins in my search does not seem to matter if I am going to advance it to 5. 7mm anyway. Also, when I removed the pump from my wrecked truck I pulled it at TDC. The pump shaft has not been rotated since I removed it, so every thing should be timed. Any thoughts on pre oiling or pre fueling so it is not too hard to prime?

If you have a 913 pump, 5. 7 mm is about 17 deg. as I recall, OK to use. Pre-oil through the afc (if you just take out the plug over the star wheel it goes slow as the holes inside to the governor housing are small) with about 3/4 quart engine oil. Prime the fuel by pumping the lift pump plunger with a banjo fitting loose before the pump, and then afterwards with the overflow valve loose. Use Mopar non chlorinated brake cleaner (not another brand) whose part # ends 150AB. Dont use cleaner with toluene or xylene in it. Don't spray or blow dry hard as that will blow oil out of the pump's front bearing back on the taper.

Joe,

Thanks for the tip. I will get some mopar cleaner, however I was thinking on using acetone or MEK. I have to run to Bosch tomorrow for parts and get some other things. I will probably install it tomorrow afternoon. I will let you know how it goes.

acetone and methyl ethyl ketone are not as good for solvating oil. The Mopar cleaner contains heptane and isopropyl alcohol if I recall, and that combination works well.
