I have to change a vp 44 pump on a friends 02 . Is there a timing pin to line up or is that only on a p7100 aplication? I was under the impression that the rotary pumps only rotate one time injecting all 6 cyl on every rotation. So as long as you line up the key you should be in time? Please imput on this so i am clear on the subject.

There is no need to use a timing pin to replace a VP.

Pull the breather off the front structure so you can see the pump gear, and then rotate engine till the keyway on the pump shaft is facing upwards. This will help to keep the key from falling off the shaft, and going down into the front gear set.

Then just disconect everything, remove the nut and washer that holds the gear to the pump shaft, I recomend using a pen magnet to get the nut and washer off, so you dont risk dropping them into the engine. You will need a gear puller to pop the gear of the front shaft, and then the pump should come out.

Swap VP-44

The fast way (I only have a Minute here), Remove the breather from the front of the VP. Remove the nut on the VP's shaft. Bar the engine over till the Keyway is straight up on top. You may need to use a mirror and flashlight to see this. Remove the Fuel lines to the Cylinders, in two sets of three. (You don't need to separate the lines. ) Disconnect the electric wires, and the low-pressure fuel lines. Using a small gear puller to "BREAK" the gear loose from the VP, leave the gear in the case, it will be fine. Unbolt the VP from the engine, being careful not to drop the key. Install the new one in reverse order. IMPORTANT: use the new key that came with the new VP. There is a number on the new key. That should match a number on the new VP's data plate.

Search up “Change VP-44” on the site, there are dozen + threads. Enjoy, Moose00

To Gain Access to the VP-44

Steve, I Forgot to mention, in order to gain access, A; Unbolt the Throttle Position Sensor, and lay it to the left hand side. You may have to disconnect the wire harness for it but, don't disconnect the Throttle, Cruise Control, or Transmission Cables. B; Remove the Air Intake Horn from the engine. If you are careful, you can reuse it's gasket. 10 mm bolts on that.

On the Injector lines, I think they go to; the top Cylinders 1, 2, & 4; and on the bottom 3, 5, &6. Un bolt the clamps from the head, don't unclamp the lines from each other.

Injector Pump Nut Torque

Torque it to 135 Ft-Lbs. That's what the Mopar service manual for my 01 says. You can put a socket on the alternator to hold the engine when you torque or if you have the barring tool use it. Main thing to remember when you do the pump "Take your time and pay attention". It's really not that hard a swap if you don't get in a hurry.

Well i got it off with no problems, I am a Deere mechanic so this is nothing new, I just needed the timing issue and the Torque of the nut. I do not have a service manual for this truck so all the pointers are well appreciated.

Thank You

Does Deere use the VP-44?

Steve, How did the VP-44 change out go?

Have you came across a VP-44 in a Deere engine in your travels? I may have read on the TDR board that they do use it. If so, many or any failures  ?? Just curious, Moose00
