OK the turbo is out. Not as difficult as I thought it might be. Looks to be in good shape. Seems tight. No scoring on the housing from the impellers, just oil everywhere. I downloaded a manual from BAE Turbo System's site and the manual shows that once the v-band is off, just tapping the two housings apart with a soft hammer. Weelll, it isn't cooperating! I've soaked it with penetrating oil and I'll see how that works, but if anyone has a better idea, I'd appreciate it.

LOL. Unfortunately, it's got to work after beating on it. Now, I'm thinking of taking it to a shop to have it rebuilt for about $350. Less stress that way.

Take it to a turbo shop. It should be balanced after reassembly anyhow and you may has well throw a set of bushings in it and have a good as new unit.

Holeset Manual

You can download the manual from Holeset, it has everything you need take it apart, inspect it and rebuild it. I've done a couple of them, it's a good read on what needs to be checked and replaced.

Hey Tom... .

There could be a easier way than that... .

Should only be a 45 minute drive from your place in Park City,UT over to Midvale,Ut where High Tech Turbo is located at. I'd try calling over there and see what kind of help they can be to get you squared away... ..... Andy

P. S. -nice to see that your still snooping around some,LOL!

Hey Andy. Long time no see. Thanks for the offer to contact the shop in Midvale, but I dropped it off at Industrial Injection yesterday. We'll see what they have say.

Hey all,
I thought I'd update the group on the final out come of the turbo saga. The original turbo w/ 251,000 miles on it had a cracked housing and corrosion around the cartridge that dictated it was un-usable for re-build purposes. I bought a re-man turbo from Industrial Injection for $650. That included a oil outlet seal, studs, and a manifold gasket. There are some available on ebay for slightly cheaper, but I decided to go local, although after paying SLC/UT sale tax, I might go the online route in the future. None of the $300 turbos on ebay were Hy35 compatible. Piece of cake to put back in and the truck runs fine now. The time and labor to switch out the turbo is not difficult and I'd recommend it to anyone that has a modicum of mechanical know how. Front hubs next and a muffler.
