Ok guys... . I know this path has been stepped on several times, but I need some advice. I am ready to buy new tires for my truck and here is what I am contemplating.



These are what I have found at a reasonable price. My goal is to find a quiet set of tires that will last at least 30-40k.



GoodYear AT/S $154ea (E Rated)

Michelin LTX M/S $166ea (E Rated)

Pirelli Scorpion S/T $155ea (E Rated)

Pathfinder ATR A/S $150ea (E Rated)

BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO $158 (D Rated)

Cooper Discover AT's $123 (E Rated)



I've heard that the BFG's are give off a lot of noise due to how aggressive the tread is, though I haven't heard anything good ro bad about the Pathfinders or Pirelli's. Does anybody have any reccomendations or opinions?

Kevin, I hope you are avoiding those big Colorado wildfires.



You skipped the best tire made . . . . the Bridgestone Dueler AT. My first set lasted 58,000. They are very quiet, and run true. good on wet rainy roads, snow, and pavement.
 
I had the Michelin tires you reference on my last Dodge truck--I sold the truck with 10,000 miles on the tires and was pleased with their wear and traction. I hunt quite a bit and so am off road a fair amount, on gravel, and snow here in Montana. I thought they were a good off road traction tire and will replace my stock tires with them when the time comes.

Beleive it or not... I've been trying to avoid the fires like the Plague. . I really feel bad for the people who have been affected by them. .



As far as the Brigdestone Duelers... . I've talked to several shops around town and they will not sell me them. They have all said that they don't carry the duelers in a rating above C. I've had 1 shop tell me they will sell me a D rating, but all of the rest tell me that they will only sell E rated tires for 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Kinda funny... but I was looking for E rated anyway.

I've been useing the Coopers for years I love them. I have Generals on my Ram now Lt315/75R-16. And they are just as good as the Coopers... ... ... ... Rick

I was hoping to find the tire size , but couldn't. If you are wondering about the BFG's, I am currently running the 285 75 16's on my truck. They have about 25,000 on them and I cannot hear them any more than the stock LTX's. The current price for the 285 BFG's is 144. That is the nationaly advertized price. The next tire I get from BFG is tthe 295 75 16. Not much taller but a little wider. As for the Brigstone, They are mad by Firestone;) ;) ;) I wouldn't put one of these tires on my mother in laws car. A friend had one come apart as soon as it got hot out here and it took out the bed side of his Phord. The only good part was I drove by and saw him broke down... I just had to yell

" phound on road dead... ... ... He wasn't smiling..... Greg

I Have to agree with Dixie and Greg. My 295 BFG's are very quiet and are wearing well. I should be able to get 50,000 miles out of them. Nicole has the 285's and agrees that they are quiet and her's looks like she'll get at least 60,000. I think the 285's have an advantage over the 295's because they are almost as wide as the rim, causing it to wear better. I however wouldn't go any smaller than my 295's. (coolness factor :cool: )

I'll be in your neck of the woods in September (Unfortunately in a rental car :( )

the toyo open country a/t is very similar to the nitto terra grappler, but the nitto is a bit more agressive i think :p

or... how about the pirelli scorpion p-zero. . in a 345/60/17... on some nice 17x10 weld mountain crushers... the tires are rated at 3400lbs each... about 33x13. 5x17

I been going though the tire decision myslef lately.



Here are my opinions:



I have heard from many individuals that Goodyears are hard to balance.



I do not think you will get good mileage out of the Coopers. A big Cooper dist. here in town said they do not have a tire that holds up well on the might (heavy) Cummins. Plus my experience with Coopers has been very poor.



The Scorpoins look to be a decent tire, but they do not wear very well. A friend had some on a 1500 Chevy and they looked in rough shape with 20k on them when he sold the truck.



Pathfinder???



There are many members with the BFG's and I don't think I have read too many negative comments (if any) about them.



It is hard to beat Michelin IMO, but they may not provide the best off pavement or snowy traction (Although I thought my M/S series did fairly well in the snow).



Personally, if I wasn't so thrifty I'd buy the BFG's, and that is only because they do not make a 285 Michelin.



I agree with others, anything made by Firestone is crap.



I think I am going to try a set of Yokohama Geolander AT +II. Although the may not be the best tire, I can get them locally for $105 each in the size I am shopping for. I don't expect great mileage out of them, but they are $200 less a set than BFG's. Piers has a set on his truck and when I spoke to him at Muncie he said he was happy with them.

I've had both the Goodyear Wrangler AT/S and the BFG's. The AT/S's wore out quickly and caused the rear axle to bounce:( The BFG's are great tires but I just couldn't justify the price for them. So I bought a set of Yokahama Geolander AT's and these have been the best tires I've ever had. They were quite inexpensive and have lasted a long time (41000). I just recently purchased a new set of the AT +II's and its seems that they made some minor improvements like a rim protector and a little more aggressive tread pattern. I definitely recommend these tires. If you have any questions feel free to contact me... .

DO NOT GET PATHFINDERS#@$%! #@$%! #@$%! Bought a pair for the rear Wen. . They stayed on for about 2 hours. Took them back and had them taken OFF. They are real squrrily. On the first exit ramp I about rolled the truck doing 35 on a ramp I usually take at 50 ( traffic ). They are the biggest pieces of@#$^ any one ever marketed. I would rather have Firestone 500's.



I have run BFG AT/KOs 265/75/16 for the last 40k miles. They are only load range D. Exellent on/off road tire, not noisey, held up ok for towing. They are about 75% worn, I gave them to my son for his F*rd



I put on the Michelin LTS ms. They do not make the LTX at in a load range E only D.



Goodyear's are noisier ( the more miles the noisyr they get, Had them on my service truck, gave good service ) than BFG's.

The tires I run on my truck in the winter are a generic Firestone 265-75x16s in a rather agressive mud tire pattern, but with no sipes. They do great in snow and on ice and they wear well are not too noisy.



Generally I've heard that sipes are good for ice and snow, but I think these trucks are heavy enough that they don't need the sipes to perform well. And without the sipes - and probably with a harder rubber compound - they wear really well.

To answer your question KatDiesel... Yep, I want to stick with the stock size 265-75-16. On the highway, I like to drive pretty fast, so I want my speedo to be as accurate as possible.

Michelin LT245/75R16 LTX AT

Installed four Michelin LT245/75R16 LTX AT tires for $161. 00 per tire, which included balancing and mounting. I've got over 61K miles on the tires now and can probably get another 15K to 20K out of them. Plan on going back with the same tire when I do replace them.
 
My last set of tires were the Cooper HT tire. At 40K miles, they started seperating, and I had two go bad within 5000 miles. One of the tires started to seperate on the highway, and luckily, I pulled over before it blew up. I agree that they dont hold up on the Rams. I kept the air pressure up to spec, and rotated every 6K miles like clockwork, and they still blew up.



I replaced them with the Dueler AT's (D Rated) and I am pretty happy so far. I went 60K on my factory goodyears, but I didnt like them enough to buy a second set.
