One of my brand new tire chains broke last month during the snow we had in Kentucky. When it broke, I heard it whapping and pulled over, but it had already beat a lot of the paint off behind the real wheel on the passenger side. I had already been considering having the lower panels of the truck coated with something similar to Rhino-liner like my brothers work truck is. I think his is Line-X and actually looks pretty sharp. Has anybody on here had any long term experience doing this with one of these products, ie fading, chipping, etc? Thanks.

By the way, the chains I got were the Diamond Quick Fit from tirechains.com. I only had them on for one day when one of the side chains broke on the outside. Nice looking chains, easy to put on, and they said they were heavy duty but maybe not heavy enough for our trucks. Anyhow, I'm not saying buy them or not, only advising what happened to mine.

I believe Dodge recommends Class U chains for our trucks just due to the overall curb weight... . these trucks are heavy. The Diamond Quick Fit you have are probably not Class U rated. Very sorry to hear of the damage to the fender :{.

I put chains on because I got caught by surprise by the snow overnight and had a 16 foot trailer hooked up with an ATV and woodsplitter on it. They worked really great while they last.

I've heard good things about line-x'ing the rocker panels in online forums. Read an article in a 4-wheeling magazine where a guy did it and liked it. Some of the comments were no fading and no problems with chipping, scratching, etc. I have a line-x liner in the bed of my truck and like it. I haven't heard anything bad... .

Actually -- I saw a 3rd gen truck on www.roadarmor.com that looked like the entire truck was line-x'ed. I'm not sure, but it looked like it. Check it out. :)

Have Rhinoliner in my 96 and 03 that was color matched to the trucks. The 96 looks more pink than maroon today and I would say it has been that way for last 5 years. The 03 the blue has started to fade but not nearly as bad as the maroon did.

How fast were you going when the chain broke? I have always followed the manf recomended speds of 25mph and never had a problem but then I only use chains about every 3 years for a few days(most years we can get around fine without them) when we go sking.

Thanks fo rthe info on the Line-x, I'm kinda leaning that direction. As far as how fast I was going when the chain broke... . maybe 20 miles and hour. I pulled over pretty quick because even though it was my first experience with chains I sort of figured that's what it was. It doesn't take very many revolutions to eat the paint right off.

My dad did the bottom of his '97. His is a blue truck and he choose grey for the color and also did the bed. The paint was chipped up on the rocker panel and the coating made the truck look real nice. It has been a couple years and it has worn real well. The only issue he has had is the step plate under the door was not covered and the line where the coating starts is hit with his boot and is peeling alittle. I would suggest covering the whole step plate up to the rubber door seal. Not sure what color you would want with red paint, I understand that the red coating is most likely to fade.

The truck my brother has (2005 Dodge) was coated on that step just like you are recommending, all the way up to the plastic. His truck is grey and the coating they put on is black, plus they trimmed about an inch around each wheel well. If I hadn't seen it, my mental picture of it says it would look like crap, but it really looks good. I wasn't gonna do red, but thinking maybe black. But if they had a color similar to a silver I might go that route. I still haven't decided about the around the whell well thing yet. I've heard enough positive comments I think that I will go this route vs repainting. I have to deal with a lot of gravel roads anyway, so painting would be an ongoing matter. Thanks for the input.
