tire clearance

i am looking to change to 16 inch tires on my 5th wheel and am worried about the clearance in between the tires. i now have four and a quarter now but would be down to two and a quarter with the 16 inch tires. will this be enough clearance

That should be fine. You won't be able to run tire chains on both axles but you should never need to anyhow.

My '07 HitchHiker fifthwheel has only about one inch of clearance between front and rear tires.

Mine has always had just under 2 inches - you'll be fine.
I was camping last year and saw a very new trailer (temp tags) with wheels so close together, I had to walk over when they were gone and see if I could run a finger between them. I could, barely. I bet they have problems eventually.
