Tire Cracking

I am considering replacing the Goodyear Wrangler GSA tires on my dually, as all of them have developed cracks around the rims. Two have already been replaced. I was wondering how the General tires are wearing on the new trucks? Any feedback would be appreciated. How often are members rotating their tires on dually's?

Save yourself a bunch of grief and put some Michelin LTX/ M/S 's on it. Have 60k heavy towing miles on mine and still look brand new,,,, just say no to goodyear!!!

The LTX is a very good tire, I got 72,000 miles on the originals on my 99. New truck came with General Ameri-Tracs, as did my 04 travel traileer. Had a tread come off with about 15,000, they denied any responsability, said the tire was run low and overloaded and neither was the case. bg

I had to replace my Goodyears with Generals because the GY's all cracked. I replaced them at the time with General Ameri-Trac TR's. They made it 25,000 miles (a little over 1 year) and were worn all the way to the wear bars. Then one tire started throwing tread.



I just recently put on a set of Firestone Transforce AT's. I am very happy with them so far. The Michelins didn't have an aggressive enough tread for me. I have been running around Denver lately, and these tires work very well in the snow (I haven't had to use four wheel drive yet). The are also pretty quiet on the highway. I haven't towed with them yet (the trailer is winterized), but I expect they'll do just fine. They were under $1100 for six, mounted, lifetime balance and full road hazard warranty.

My stock Factory Michelin's ( Brand new 06 with 500 miles) have all cracked. I suspect they cracked from sitting on the dealers lot. Micheline is standing behind them and will replace them free of charge. Will be middle of next week before they can be shipped from Chicago!!!

I have several trucks and have used the Michelins, Goodyears, and Generals... . we've had the best results from the Michelins but I have coffee with a guy who is a Brigstone/Firestone rep... . and he offered me their new Firestone at 155 or so each... . to test them... . If I don't have some steel wheels made in 19. 5" and move to that tire... I'm going to try the Firestone only based on price... their at least 40 bucks each cheeper than the Michelins... . or 240 a set... . and for that price I'd try them... .



I'm working on a container of new steel wheels in 19. 5" from a wheel vendor... as my F550 19. 5" tires are cheaper, hold more weight and go almost 50% more miles than the 17" stock tires... . I've got two manufactures of wheels working on the project and expect a prototype by the middle of Feb.....

I appreciate all of the feedback. I had a look at the Firestone tires and they look pretty good price wise compared to the Michellins. I think I will be giving them a try. I had Firestones on a Ford f-150 many years ago and they lasted over 70,000. I was pleasantly surprised. I'll give updates on the wear and performance of whatever tire finally goes on the beast after Christmas. It doesn't snow down here in Florida, but I will travelling to snow country in late January. We'll see how they do then!

My neighbor has had a 03 and now a 05. 03 had the Michelins. He got 90k or so from them. The 05 had Generals and he got 90k from them! He recenty put another set of Generals back on it.

Generals are the best bang for your dollar.

They are a great tire too.

The Goodyear's have an 80% reject rate when tested on a balancer with the road force/run-out roller.

I had some Goodyear's on my 96 and they where the worst tire I have ever had.

Replaced them with some BFG`s.

My 03 had BFG`s and the 06 has Michelin's... .

I ran the Goodyears the truck came with for a while, didn't think they were all that bad. Ran some Coopers and they were good. The Generals on my new 06 Dually seem a little slippery on snow and ice. Most recently ran the Michelin's on my daily tower 03, and they wore forever but were noisy. The Michelins were pretty good in the snow. My newest set of treads are the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's and they sure do look the coolest of any of the others. Seriously though in addition to being great looking, they have a firm grip in the snow and run quieter than the Michelins. Scorpion ATR is not a blocky as the others I have run, has narrow insteps every other lug or so. These new ATR's feel great, I wonder though how long they will last. Truck odomoter at 226,000 miles mostly towing.

goodyear SRA side wall cracks

Recently went through same problem with the front tires on my 3500. The sidewalls looked like they were dry rot but the rears were fine. Goodyear took care of me as they only charged me 81. 00 dollars for both fronts . The tires only had 30,000 miles on them . Robert

I gots 25k out of my Badyears before the decided to part themselves... went with the Firerock Transports... . traction type for the rears and highway ribbed(for her pleasure of course) on the rears... . balanced out real nice... way better ride... got 6 tires 4 eagle alloys for less then two grand installed. the Michellins are nice but $$$$... ... look at my pics to see what I got... I wont rotate anymore... I will flip the fronts on the wheel to wear them evenly... . should get at least 60k out of the rears leaving them right where they are... just a thought

My OEM Michelin's have tons of tiny "cracks" in the sidewalls. All 5 of them.

Been that way for at least the last 30k miles. They're at 76k now, and I'm hoping to get them to go to 100k.

For the most part, I don't worry about the cracks. They're extremely shallow.
