Im in need of new tires and want to go up to 35" from my 305s (~34"), In looking I see that 12.5x35.17 and 315x70x17 are virtually identical in their specs but not their price. Can anyone enlighten me as to what Im missing? load, height, width, everything seems to be the same. If Im not overlooking something thats key, what is the better choice or does it really come down to price?

Just slight difference. The load will change between different brands/makes of tires, but I really don’t know between these two sizes of the same tire.

thanks gents, I looked at the load rating for each but i dont recall whether I looked specifically at the number of plys. thatll give me something to think about

cool calculator, I used the provided specs on a couple of different websites but hadnt seen that before, thanks
 
Load rating of plys is meaningless anymore, that just tells the level of puncture resistance on the face of the tire. All 17" tires are weight rated at max 3195 lbs due to government interference, even thought they may be able to handle more. Look at the weight of the tire, that will almost always show the price difference. The heavier tire will have more rubber, cost more, and be more suited to a heavy truck.

If you are looking for a tire to enhance multiple areas you need to go with a 18 or 20 inch tire, much better selection of ratings and sizes.
 
The LT/metric tire may also have a higher speed rating than the flotation/inch size...not that anybody on TDR ever speeds....
 
Ahhh thanks, i dont recall checking the diff in speed ratings, i figure i only need 75 or 80

Good idea on the total weight that hadnt occurred to me
 
The better tires will have a higher speed rating and weight. Really, you want those speed ratings up there as it will be a better tire. These trucks eat cheap tires at a high rate, investing in top quality will save $$ in the long run.
 
285/75R17 is 34" x 12"... Toyo Open Country AT II, E rated load, S rated speed (112mph), 10 ply. They fill the wheel wells perfectly with no rub, Rotate every 6k and you'll get 47k plus of life. A set of Rickson steels and some 19.5 Goodyear G622's would be nice. Cerb is right though... You need to leave the 17" to get a better selection.

Thanks guys, It's time for me to get serious about them and now I have a better set of criteria to consider
 
Well I pulled the trigger on a set of Falken Wild Peak ATs, 315x70x17. I have run them before on my 01 QC, albeit in a different size obviously. I found them to be smooth, quiet and long wearing, all good stuff, they rated higher than the others I was looking at for snow, which sometimes is important for me. Plus, I found them on sale and with free shipping on tire buyer.com AND i actually had the cash to pay for them!! so rather than fritter away the money and be in a pinch when I really really need them, I went ahead. They'll be in early next week.

I put Hummer H2 wheels on my '03 and have been running 315's since. With no suspension mods, it works fine, but I think that extra 2/3" might cause some occasional rubbing.
