Tire Max Load Rating Question

The "Tire & Rim Association" (standards body for tires and rims) have for some reason set the max load capacity for 17" tires at 3195 whether they are load range D or E. Some examples:



LT265/75R16E is rated at 3415 but a LT265/70R17E is rated at 3195



LT285/75R16D is rated at 3305 but a LT285/70R17D is rated at 3195

LT285/75R16E is rated at 3750 but a LT285/70R17E is rated at 3195



I have yet to find out why. Anyone know?

There are several 17" wheel tire options that exceed 3195lbs. The 285/70/17 E's I ran were rated at 3750 lbs.

The reason that 3195 is popular is that's the weight rating on OEM tires, so to be able to legally sell a tire for a 2500/3500 it has to meet OEM ratings, thus 3195 lbs on a LRD.

I also haven't been able to find a 17" wheel rated for more than 3200 lbs and can't find the rating on the OEM wheels. . I do have a hard time beleive that the machined aluminum OEM wheels can't handle more than 3200 lbs thou.
