Ive been looking for some tires for my 99 quad 4x4. Currently running Michelin 265-75
on factory rims. Found a set of Goodyears,
same size with a more aggressive tread. The only differance is the Goodyears are load
rated "D" instead of the Michelins "E" rating. Reading the load rating on the side of the tire I note about a 400lb differance in the two. Is this enough to matter?? I dont carry much payload and towing is around
4K.

Serveral years ago I was the manager of a tire shop. I think you will be OK. The secret is you said you don't do much hauling and 4,000 on a trailer is no problem. If you hauled heavy or big 5er I would personally want that extra weight capacity. I have put 4,000 lbs. of feed in the bed of my truck several times.

i run load range D on my 2500 with no problems. routinely haul 425 gal of water (3400 lbs) and have hauled 4200 lbs of gravel and didn't have a problem. although i wouldn't recommend it for long distances or high speeds. run properly and cautiously when heavily loaded you should be fine with the D range tires.
