Good a. m. , I was wondering if anybody has any input for tires on 3rd generation wheels. I bought 3rd gen. wheels off craigslist and decided to have Goodyear Wrangler Dura Tracs (LT285/70R/17) mounted on them. I don't really like them... at 70 mph, they seem to be all over the road, also my mileage has suffered. On my stock 16's, I had Toyo Open Country's and they didn't wear very well. What recommendations do you guys have for me?

Thanks, Nick

What terrain do you want the tires biased toward? All highway, mostly mud, combination of everything? Certain tires do well for certain conditions. No tire excels in every condition.

Mchrist, looking for a good all round tire... a little of everything... mostly highway driving but also some driving in mud and snow in the Pacific Northwest!

Thanks

My Nitto Dura Grapplers are biased toward highway, but have good traction for snow and dirt, but probably not sloppy mud. Nitto Trail Grapplers or Toyota M55s look like a better choice for sloppy mud, but not as good for highway...

Michelin makes great tires, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the LTX M/S. I feel those have a slight advantage over Nitto Dura Grapplers once tread wear gets below half. The Nitto tread blocks have a pyramid shape to them, so as tread wears off, the spacing between the blocks gets narrower. Great for stability and towing, but not for snow/mud.

Nitto Terra Grapplers may be a good compromise, but I never had them.

You will have to study the tread patterns and decide which direction better suits your particular needs/wants.

I will be going back to Michelin on next tire purchase. Either LTX/MS or the AT2A's.

I have been looking for set of 3rd Gen wheels in my area. No luck yet.

bfg all terraines are awsome... . never an issue on any condition...

i was running a set of hankook rt03, they held up awesome, more of an aggressive tire, but i cant say i noticed and excessive amount of road noise.

Tuglife,

Did your 285/70s rub the upper control arm with the 3rd gen wheels? I bought a set of 3rd gen chrome wheels and mounted a set of Dura Grappler 285/75s and they rubbed the upper control arm when locked in both directions. I am now running 265/70 BFGs but was thinking of trying a 285/70. Thanks.

NW driver here and jump over the pass plenty in the winter chasing birds... I really like the Firestone Transforce AT 265/75-16 E Tire,

grips like a cheata wet or dry and wears real nice,. I have been running these for years.

JDavey, I have 2" wheel spacers mounted so I don't notice them rubbing on the upper control arms... they do rub on the mudflaps when locked in either direction though.

Nick

Thanks Nick, I will look into the wheel spacers as I like the 3rd gen wheels with the 285s. I can deal with some rubbing on the mudflaps but I hated to drive the thing when they would rub the control arms.
