I am at the point where I need to replace the tires on my 04 2500. I currently have 265/70/r17 Bf Goodrich. I have gotten what I think is very good mileage from them at 70,000.

I just recently started a new job and will be doing all highway driving and NO hauling except fpr an occasional couple sheets of plywood. What downside and / or benefit would there be to going to a P tire of the same size. I am looking for a smoother ride and maybe better mileage.

Thanks

P-rated tires won't take the weight of a 2500 even unloaded... I found this out on a 2nd gen truck I bought used (with new p-sized tires on it)... within 10k, I had on blow out, and the other had a cup full of rubber dust in it... they were BFG Long Trails.

For what you are looking for, other than they are a little stiff; I really like my Pirelli STRa's... I have well over 100k on them (with about 1/4 inch of tread left), they are very quiet, they balance well, they handle weight/loads very good, and the rolling resistance is almost non-existent.

But they are more of a highway tire than an all terrain...

If the BF Goodrich worked good for you, stay with them. I personally like Michelin. Whatever you do, never go with P rated tires on a heavy front end truck. I assume you have the Cummins engine.

Include your signature so we know what you have.

Find the actual weight on each axle for your truck, and set the tire's pressure accordingly. You don't need to run 70 or 80 PSI in the rear tires of an unloaded truck. Most tire manufacturers publish a pressure chart for LT tires that gives the recommended pressure for various loads. You'll have to hunt for it on the manufacturer's web site. My truck actually has two stickers in the door, one with pressures for full load and one for light loading.

I had Cooper Discoverer H/T's on my '03 (until it was totaled) had 80k miles with 0 problems.

Quiet, balanced easily, road good and the wear was great.

Price was pretty good too.

When my '04 needs shoes I'll be getting them again.

I would go with a LRE highway tire, they will last longer and support the front end weight, even when not towing.

Something like the Toyo H/T or Nitto Dura Grappler.

For reference your front axle probably has about 4800 lbs on it with you in the truck.

Thanks for your answers. I figured that the P's couldn't handle it.

I would put info about my truck in signature, but not sure how to do it

Tab at top of the page "discussion forums", under it is "user control panel", under it is the option (on the left) to fill out your signature... at least that's what works for me...

Or just state what truck you are working on in the first post...

Either one works...
