tire size choice advise

My thread disappeared so I'll try an abbreviated version now:

My Michelins are about done. Thinking about doing wheels & tires. I want taller tires for less engine rpms. An ideal size is 255/85 as it's just over 33", but I can only find it in a mud tire, and I dont go off-road. 285/75 is shorter. A 305/70 is about the same height. The 315/75 is super-tall! Question is, in your vast experience... . is the rolling resistance of the wide tires plus the added wind turbulence ruining the mileage gained by fewer revs?

Give me you expertice, please!!!

Cooper has at least 2 tires in the 255/85 profile, and I know one of them is a mild all-season tread.

They also have an agressive traction tread... Can't remember if there's more.

I went from 245/75's to 285/75 BFG's and I picked up almost two miles per gallon on the interstate. My rpm's went from a little under 2000 at 70mph to 1700. I always get 20 to 22mpg on the interstate now. Not sure if I want to go any bigger than that with the 3:54's though.

Brian, Try the tirerack.com. They have several in a all season tread like the radial rover at by Dunlop. Good tire. I have been running 315-75-16's since the truck had 4,000mi(now at 110,000) and I really like them. they are around 34" tall depending on the brand. On the high way the give an excellent ride but they do tend to let you roll a little to fast. i see about 18-20 on the highway at 65mph ttroble is its hard to go that slow. i trave the vast expanse of the great basin all the time and 80mph is more like it. At that speed the engine is just lofing along and i get 17-18 mpg. Hope this helps. Dave
