Tire sizes?

I am going to be replacing my tires soon and I want to use a larger tire, such as the 275,285 0r 295. Will all of these sizes work with my stock rims? I'd appreciate any suggestions or opinions. thanks, SAM #ad

I have 2 friends that have put 285 BFG Mud terrains on the stock wheels. They work and look good too. I think the 295's are the same width, so they should work also. Hope this helps!

I've been using Cooper Discoverer LT tires in 255-85-16 for several years. I like them because they are tall (15. 3" loaded radius vs. 14" stock) for more trail clearance, and no wider than stock tires. They work better than 285-75s on the stock 6. 5" wheels, and weigh less than really big tires for less unsprung weight, inertia, and stress on the brakes. They have performed well in rain, snow, dirt. Probably would be only fair in mud. They clear everything and I have used chains with them too.

Make sure you know the width of your rims. The current SLT aluminum wheels for the 2500 I believe are 8" x 16". Older wheels were 6. 5" x 16". I am not sure when this changed (2000?) or about the steel rims. The 285/75-16 need 8" wide rims, should not be used on the 6. 5". The 235/85-16 need the 6. 5" wide rims and should not be used on the 8" rims (you can use 255/85-16 however on 8", but hard to find).

A friend put 285/75-16 with after-market 8" rims on his '97 2500 with no lift. They will barely rub his front mud flaps (moulded Mopar units) when steering wheel turned all the way. Although you might get 295s on, after seeing his 285s I think that is as big as you should go unless you lift the front end. Note that most 285s are actually cheaper than the 275s as the 275/75-16 is an odd size.
